I would highly recommend reading the novels. Even if you generally don’t really have the time to dig into a lengthy book, I would make time for these ones. I’ve heard the extended universe novels by Brian Herbert are okay but they kind of just feel like fan fiction. Don’t worry about those, keep that out your conscious and just have your eyes on the 6 books by Frank Herbert. There are multiple points you can stop and Frank passed away before he got to finish them so the second trilogy is left unresolved anyway, although they have some really creative ideas. I would say the first book is a must read, it’s a science fiction classic and masterpiece. I, like many others, would recommend to at least read Dune Messiah as well as it is brilliant. Not too much to ask considering it’s the shortest book in the series and you can finish it in a couple days to a week. Read Children of Dune if you want to get that last book in the trilogy done and if you want to read a magnificent science fiction novel that may have been more influential to the science fiction genre than the first. If you want to read what a lot of people consider the best Dune novel, read God Emperor of Dune after that. There’s a big time gap between it and the last book so if there was any amount of Dune fatigue from the 1800+ pages you read, you’ll get a refresher here as well. You can wrap it up after that unless you want to read the last 2 novels. By this point, you’re probably considering it since by book 4 you must be really into Dune.

I strongly disagree. You should start with Quinn’s idea’s series on the Dune books. If you jump straight to reading you will not understand many of the names and terms being used. Normally you have to go through the series multiple times to really get into it. If you get a background that doesn’t spoil the writing you will enjoy the books 1000x more. The movies are good for Hollywood but it’s not REALLY Dune. Dune is 34, 000 year timeline.
