That actually makes so much sense that it was different in the book. When I was watching the Dune movies I was thinking “there’s no WAY this entire story takes place in less than 9 months”.

It’ll be interesting how they handle this with Messiah, but having just watched Dune ‘84, Alia was one of the best parts of that adaptation (and she’s a successful singer-actress now!)

Alia isn't prescient, she's just pre-born. At this point of the story, Alia's mind is an exact copy of her mother's + their ancestors. She doesn't develop individuality until far later, which is one of the strongest points for her character in Messiah and SPOILERS FOR CHILDREN OF DUNE












One of the reasons she succumbed to the Baron's persona in CoD. She WAS her mother during the early stages of her life. When Jessica left for Caladan and Paul fled into the desert, Alia was cut off from all support. Without a solid individuality, she ended up making contact with her ancestors and the strongest one for her was the Baron, which offered to help

Lynch's Alia is absolutely horrifyingly epic. Her triumph when she has just avenged her father and clan - !!!

My problem with Jessica still being pregnant with Alia is how it reduces the time frame for the Fremen uprising. It took a few years in the book and the other two adaptations. The longer uprising would better show Paul’s progression from a Duke’s son to prophet/warrior leader.

Showing a six year old in a paroxysm of pleasure at killing people was the creepiest thing in Lynch's Dune, and that's saying a lot.

Some people don't understand what the word adaptation means. I've read several comments talking about how the Denis Villeneuve movies are not a 1-to-1 adaptation and so therefore are not a _good_ adaptation... but if you can watch Dune part one and Dune part 2 and then you can read the books and be like, "yep I got all of this information from the movies, even that was delivered in a slightly different way I still got all the same information all the feels came across all the vibes were on point, I still understand the basis of the story, " then that's a good adaptation! It doesn't need to be 1 to 1, it needs to ADAPT the book format into a MOVIE format. Which these movies do!

I was slightly worried when they didn’t include this time jump and I kept wondering how they would conclude the movie with or without Alia being born but I wasn’t all that worried once I realized that the different approach to make the fetus fully aware is like also as eerie as a toddler having a full adult awareness. Both work well I would say!

Dune 2 was cool and all but they had some major cop outs...

No magic demon baby, no mentats, no spice orgies, no explanation of what the water of life actually does, no mutant people

As much as murderer-baby Alia was my favourite character, I can see why they removed her. It would have added more confusion and distracted from the main themes. I have the same feeling about the Guild Navigator. I love them, but I can see why they removed them to make things simpler.
