When seasons change or the weather makes a big swing toward cold, older critters don't always handle it well. You gave her a good life and an appropriate ending. Rosie was a good bird and you are a good steward.

I remember when I lost my first pet chicken more than a decade ago and it was unexpected. I wasn't there for her death and I cried for days. I still get teary eyed from it actually. I can only hope she's running free in chicken heaven, along with Rosie. I'm so sorry for our loss, Morgan.

I lost one of my cockerals to freezing. He didnt go up to roost with his siblings and mom that night. He was either too bullied and got pushed out or just didnt feel there was room to squeeze into the loft opening. This was a heart wrenching discovery for me. I was so proud to have raised these babies up with no issue till that. My poor little rooster boy💔 He was a beautiful porcelain Belgian Bearded Duccle. Had i known he was so isolated, i would have brought him in like i did his sister. I feel so guilty. Im sorry you found Rosie this way. Its so hard!!

Rosie's spirit is bonded to you by your love for her. It's a good guess that she will return to your farm family as another animal soon. Her experience as a farm chicken taught her things and she will come back to learn more, as we all do.

On a lighter note, burdock is no fun! I have a 2 year old English Springer Spaniel and he seems to always have a couple of them stuck in his fur. We usually just end up cutting the mats out of his fur to the point that he looks like a little kid who gave themselves a haircut.
