If Jono is Alicia's pop culture translator, and Alicia is Jono's translator of more erudite / bookish things, then together they're better able to understand the whole world! 👍👋 Teamwork makes the dream work! 😹🤪🤓

I grew up massively self-loathing and thinking I was a monster, beating myself up for all of the pain inside. It took a breakdown under lockdown to finally face all of the childhood trauma that had lead to that, and to finally begin to heal.

Learning that I'm worthy of love, compassion, and acceptance after 40 years of thinking otherwise is still hard, but slowly getting easier. I'm also learning to give myself grace and not see every mistake as a moral failure, and nor is needing to rest. I've been on my abusers' side for far too long- it's time to be on my own.

I have a chronic illness (ME/CFS, Hashimoto's etc), and have felt, as a result, horribly useless for a very long time. Like, my entire body betrayed me; I'm not even that old yet. Have gone from active mum-of-6 to not being able to change my own sheets without exhaustion and pain. At the end of 2021, I rescued a cat, who was FIV+, and abused, and over the next year, he went from a wee trauma bunny to a happy lap cat and if his previous "owners" saw him now, they'd never recognise him. I found it almost impossible to find any sort of care for myself, so I ended up adopting the mantra "Be as gentle on yourself and your body as you are with your trauma kitty". It helps, especially when I'm feeling so useless I get into awful thoughts like unaliving myself. I no longer say "argh. Stupid body" when I find it hard to stay upright, and instead say "it's okay, you're doing the best you can right now with little cells that are having trouble getting energy to you". I swear, it has helped my pain levels. So I heartily endorse this video and its approach. :)

This was a timely video. I just completed a very difficult exam while in grad school for speech language Pathology, and i felt like absolute crap once i submitted it one minute before the midnight deadline. Thoughts about how i am going to fail out of grad school, that i likely won't pass my class and dealing with the consequences of it, and that all of this, getting into grad school and keeping perfect grades was the cornerstone of my self worth.
I really need to rewatch and relisten to this video again, pray to God, and just feel how i'm feeling.

Thank goodness this video came out today. I was crying this morning while waiting for work to start because I was going through self-loathing thoughts that were going on about how I burden everyone and that everyone has more important things to do than to have me in their lives. I always feel so weird about doing things like complimenting myself and praising myself (probably why I have such a hard time doing the same for others without making myself sound as though what I say is forced even when I actually mean it), and while I know I’m not alone with some of the things I go through (right now that being SAD), I struggle to act as though I’m helping someone else feel better when that someone else is actually me. Great video, as always. Speaking of SAD (seasonal affective disorder), it would be interesting to see a video about how a person can help someone with this disorder. Dunno if there’s a movie or show or something that’s about people who suffer from it, but it would be good for people to know about it and what to do when they know someone is suffering from it. Just a suggestion, of course 😁

Perfect timing! I work in the medical field and wow, I’m sorry that I haven’t been compassionate toward myself. It’s been tough

Very interesting and practical! A lot of videos tell you "do this", and people needs more the "how to do this". Very good!

Knowing others suffer has never helped me suffer less or understand my suffering better.

We are social animals, and connection is important, especially when we are in pain. Isolation is a trauma response, and hurts us more than it helps.

I finally started feeling good about myself after starting a regular workout routine and losing weight.

I know tying my self-worth to a number on a scale isn't healthy. But, I used it as a catalyst to start liking myself.

Am I wrong in assuming that it may be easier to start showing ourselves self-appreciation and compassion when we enact positive change on ourself.

As long as we remeber it is not the change itself that is bringing us joy, but rather the journey and hard work we put into ourselves?

Wait... Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles in Buffy for years, is called Rupert in this as well? Cool! (I'm easily distracted at the moment. Please don't be a Judgy McJudgypants about it.)
Helpful video, as always. Thank you!
