you have to remove the belt first, put on the alternator, then put the belt back on

For the ones without a fancy tester, you can use a regular multimeter, when the car is running, it should read above 12V (normally between 13-14V), if it reads below 12V, your alternator is not charging correctly.

yes, you have to remove a lot to get it off, OR take it off from the bottom of the vehicle

@JxPhan remove the fan belts and run the engine. Then see which makes the noise stop, and pull on the offending pulley, they normally will feel not smoother when you turn em then.

How can i tell that my mechanic hasn't pulled a fast one on me with regard to telling whether I have a new alternator or reconditioned old one in my car. I have instructed him to put a new one in my car. But being a woman sometimes I find people in auto shops think I am stupid. My car is 25 years old and I love it. I love you too Scotty, you rock.

@mav93angel93 yes, bad starters do that, but so do cars with wiring shorts, espeically ground shorts.
