Prozac killed my cousin. She was depressed but had no suicidal ideation until they put her on prozac. She hanged herself in her bedroom at 16 years old, my aunt found her and never recovered from it.

When you say "more likely to commit suicide if you were on the drug" who were these people compared to? People who had a depression diagnosis? Did the study only look at SSRI? Did the people on those medications regularly saw their psychiatrist for follow up on how they're doing on the treatment and whether their doses needs adjusting or medication replaced? Did those people go to therapy regularly? When were they diagnosed? Why were they diagnosed?Did they start taking medication after some sort of traumatic event, or is their depression chronic? Have they ever been hospitalized for their depression? Have they been diagnosed with any other mental illness such as anxiety, bipolar or ptsd, and were those conditions also treated? Did they have suicidal tendencies before they started on medication, or did it start as a result of the medication? How many attempts did they have before going on medication? What's the national average of attempts (successful or not) for people on vs not on medication? Did they actually take their medication regularly as instructed? Or did they fill their prescription when they could afford it? What was their familiar and socioeconomic status? Each person may react to medication differently, and many might need their medication replaced if it's not working for them anymore. It's the responsibility of their psychiatrist or whoever prescribes their medication to monitor that. I think it's irresponsible for you to make a 60 second video on an extremely complicated and sensitive subject without any nuance.

Non-suicidal people living with the hell of their mental illness lives can be saved with medication that create a quality of life. The increase risk of suicide for people on antidepressants is important to know so they can consent to the risks and be monitored more closely to present it.

You need to give more info about the study. If 100k random people were selected, you'd fully expect those on anti depressants to attempt suicide at a higher rate since depression in a random sample would be much higher in the group on meds vs not. In other words, it's not clear if the relationship in the study between meds and suicide is causal or not. It may have been that suicides would have been much higher if the group hadn't been in meds. If the relationship is causal, then you've made a good and important video. If the relationship isn't causal, then you've made a dangerous and irresponsible video. I think you need to explain if the relationship is causal or not

I have mixed feelings about this. I’ve been on & off SSRI for over 20 years. I think I’m the type of person who needed the medication at times. I’m fine w out it now.

I lost my family friend to suicide after he stopped his antidepressants on his own:(. He passed about a month after. My mom apparently knew that he was spiraling into depression but told no one until after he'd done it, she inherited his money(her ex husband from way back). I have been severely depressed over all of it.. how psycho my mom is(she has MBP, like Gyspy Rose yes I went thru that just not as intense)& now this. I was put on a LOT of meds as a little girl that I didn't need, which is how I found your channel. I hate most doctors lol bc they aided my mother.. but viewing your work is cathartic in more ways than one. Thank you.

It doesn’t matter. In the end there are some things you just do not do to people no matter how many people say it helps them. One of those is risk tardive akathisia and crazy anhedonia and neuropathic pain and all of these other terrible neurological conditions. Almost everyone I know thought their medication was helping until it stopped working or worked until it turned on them and they decided to stop taking it. People have no idea what they are risking. Things like akathisia come back after you get injured so why risk it? They cause horrible neurological pain… there is so many reasons to use natural methods. One of someone like me is too many. I know. I’m suffering ungodly amounts 4 years after stopping medication.

We have a lot of uneducated people here in Australia 🇦🇺 1 in 8 are on them and they don’t realise or care about the risks associated with these meds. We talk about suicide as a sad thing to happen and how can people do this to their family…..how selfish etc etc etc… Without even questioning anything else.

Oh, that's just great. As a mental health therapist, I can't count the number of clients I have that are placed on SSRIs.
Is there a placebo affect?

My psych professor (who was like a prescribing psychotherapist) in nursing school said the suicide risk labels on antidepressants were taken out of context and that studies show that people who take them have less risk than those who don’t.. except she had this blank miserable face herself and seemed to be struggling and has had patients who suicided.

in the 100, 000 people, did they a have the same level of depression as those taking antidepressants? I would assume those with the worse depression wojld be on antidepressants which would make sense if they had higher suicide attempts

I spent 4 decades dealing w mental health hell. Spent a decade trying all sorts of meds until I decided I'd rather just cope as best I could then to deal w all the side effects and unkown long term consequences. Besides, nothing actually worked anyways. Even if I thought it might be working a little it never lasted. In my early 40's I changed my diet, added supplements and changed certain products I used. I did this bc of physical symptoms I'd developed, not only did it fix those I've never been more stable mentally in my entire life. It didn't happen immediately, it took some time for my body to repair and to get my microbiome healthier but here I am almost 50 and even w the hormonal changes that comes w this age it's like night and day w my mental health. I try to tell anyone who'll listen. It takes some learning bc most have no idea what a healthy diet is. We're all so depleted and doing so much damage 24/7.. it's no wonder we don't function properly.

For a while i was on antidepressants and they helped for a few months. But then nothing. I decided to go without and it was fine.

The fact he offered nothing to replace the drugs suggests to me that he might want depressed people to just give up and die...

Isn’t there a bias toward suicidality in patients that seek antidepressants … how can that factor not conflate the findings?

Thank you for posting this! I have definitely had very bad experiences with psych meds- including still going through protracted benzo withdrawal 13 years out. I would like to read the study, could you please post a link? Thanks 🙂

Were the groups of people comparable? I'm not on antidepressants but I've got no reason to be. Are those with the worst depression getting the prescription and creating error?

I stopped, taking them and switched to supplements one of the best decisions of my life.

My best friend was 44 years old. She was on an antidepressant. She went out in the backyard shot herself in the head. We talked every single day for decades. I had no idea! 🥵
