Oh if only there was a standard interview format that EVERY company used! Alas, there's not. BUT - there are a couple of common scenarios MANY companies use, and they are different!

In this week's AMA, Amy breaks down two of the popular interview formats - hypothetical and behavioral based. The interview prep for each of these may be different, so be sure to clarify with your recruiter or contact what you can expect!

I love these videos. They're informative and helpful for those of us out there job hunting. I also appreciate your sense of humor and laughed out loud (or even echoed your sentiment out loud) more than a few times! I've watched some fine job seeker related videos over the past couple of months but none have managed to share this much personality with a nice dollop of snark, a language I also speak but can dial way back when needed and appropriate.

Amy another excellent video for job seekers. Thank you for letting job seekers know that can ask what the interview format will be and that they can ask for advice on how to prepare.

I think STAR is a great structure for behavioural and hypothetical questions. For behavioural they provide the roadmap to being focused. STAR can do that for H questions as well. You shared that hypothetical questions spur a lot of different ideas. My recommendation for answering an H question would be to:
1. repeat the question out loud to buy a few extra seconds to think
2. share with the interviewer that a lot of thoughts come to mind that would need to be assessed further
3. share one thought that came to mind and then use the AR to talk about 3 action steps you would take to assess the potential solution
4. share 3 potential positive results from the 3 action steps.

I like the number 3 because it's easy for people to remember bits of 3 and if interviewers want more information points can always be elaborated upon.

Having said all that I'm a big fan of behavourial interview questions as well, but always coach my clients to prepare for a hypothetical question as well.

I love all questions, because what I REALLY love is the sound of my own voice.

I find these hypothetical questions really baffling. Behavior based makes infinitely more sense to me.

Great video! Very informative

I ♥️ S.T.A.R. Interviews because of my customer-facing roles...I'm never short on examples. There is always an example to pull from.

As a previous recruiter in financial services, always leveraged behavioral interview questions, that aligned with core competencies of role - ie client service, cross functional collaboration, project management, business acumen/problem solving etc! So just from my experience I am all about the structure and ability to prepare candidates and coach them now to dissect JDs to prepare career achievements and examples accordingly. Great video amy as always and keep them coming! I’d be interested to know your take on a new topic I saw presented by a tech recruiter recently on providing all exact interview questions to candidate prior to session, vs just type of interview approach/methodology.

Behavioral all the way. Hypothetical questions are tough to anticipate and prepare for. Also, hypothetical questions are a similar approach to case interviewing questions, which candidates spend months learning frameworks and refining and honing their case interviewing skills.

I don't like behavioral based (star) but I still do well at them I think. It's especially difficult when you've had a multiple year career break and these past examples become much harder to remember.

Behavior questions tell the interviewer more about the candidate.
