Gibson USA vs Gibson Custom Shop sg standard guitar comparison. Used a fender super sonic 60 with a vox cable! Keep it in mind that I'm referring to the 61 reissue sg as the USA standard not the less expensive one with the big neck joint! Be sure to subscribe and check out my other videos!

For a skinny/thin guitar, SG's have a very cool fat tone. And the nicest neck on any Gibson I've owned or played.

The sound is also more airy and open in the custom shop as it was in the vintage originals....the other guitar is darker and because the pickups are the same you can tell it's the wood and the quality of construction and electronics in general....

finaly a fair and honest look at the SG, thanks to this guy for comparing not shreading like a fool, instead of showing off he does what we came here for, a comparison!

Great woman tone. I have the 2003 61 reissue and I love doing that tone. I like how snarky the SG is. Cant really get that tone from a Les Paul.

Thanks Dave! Some SG luv. Clapton sounded best with an SG and 100 watt Marshall plexi. Also, early Alice Cooper guitarists used SGs

Your playing is sick… unbelievable tone

The first SG sounded hotter. Both sound nice. Every Gibson is like a woman. Everything is the same with the same components but each one will feel, moan and scream differently. It's a wonderful thing and it's what makes a Gibson, a Gibson.

One being more expensive does not mean it must sound better. It means somewhere in the production of the guitar better materials, technology, research, or man hours are being accounted for. If a luthier takes more TIME to craft a better guitar then that employer has to pay that employee more for that time. So the guitar’s price will reflect that. It cost more to make that guitar than the less expensive one. So like the player in the video stated the custom shop plays better. If 2 guitars look and sound identical but one plays better and feels better to play, youre going to choose that one. And if better playing versions are in high demand over the other than the price will also rise in accordance with that demand. I know i dont have to say this cause its all pretty basic and obvious but there are still people out there who dont understand why things cost what they do. They think its just the cost of the matter that went into building what they bought. Even the wood you dont buy you pay for. All the wood they shave off the neck or body that winds up on the shop floor you have to pay for cause it was involved in the production of that instrument. Gibson bought the wood blanks and have to make their money back for every last bit of wood they bought. I digress, when it comes to USA vs Custom shop it comes down to many factors that make one superior and the big one is time spent working on that instrument.

Excellent review Dave’s World! I’m surprised Gibson hasn’t tried taking this video down 😅

Custom shop fretboard looks heaps darker... wonder if they use a different grade of 'rosewood '?

They both sounded great; maybe I'm getting a false impression after You Tube compression etc. but I thought there was quite a bit of difference between them. TBH though, until the Custom Shop started using Custombuckers vs Gibson USA pickups I probably would not have bought a CS SG. Like you said, how much better can you really make an SG when it's such a simple guitar to begin with? I think an unintended consequence of the Custom Shop is that people look down on the USA models as 'mass produced' or as being nowhere near as good as the CS models. As your vid shows, that just isn't the case at all. Gibson USA make excellent guitars. The Custom Shop stuff may feel better and even play better but I'm not sure that it really sounds so much better that it justifies the price tag. Interesting for sure.

Good review. My impression was always that the Custom Shop models felt a little better in terms of fit & finish, if not sound.

Supposedly, here in 2021, the Custom Shop uses the best choice of woods, the neck is a bit larger, and the guitars are supposedly built by the more experienced builders, and loaded with better pickups. I have a friend who has owned several SG's and has had trouble with all the necks twisting, until recently, when he bought two Custom Shop versions .Great playing, by the way ...

These guitars will sound slightly different based on the stop tail vs vibrola. There’s also a Tele vibe with these guitars.

there is a noticeable difference between USA and Custom Shop... much like with the PRS Core vs Private Stock... it's just not an order of magnitude like you might see with Epiphone or the PRS SE's.. And it's not about how they "sound" .. it's how the feel .. the build quality is quite different if you are able to notice the details... some people can't tel the difference tho.

Interesting, SG between USA and Custom Shop do not sound that different as Les Paul.
