Many don't know the differences between a standard production Les Paul and a custom shop Les Paul. A custom shop Gibson will cost way more money so they better be good. Haha!
In reality, the only similarity between them is the body shape and the wood species used. In this video I'm showing you all you need to know about these guitars.
LET THE GIBSON BATTLE BEGIN! :) Les Paul Standard vs Custom Shop Les Paul 58 Reissue

Welcome to Gear Corner!

The CS did sound slightly better to my ears, probably the PU's had a lot to do with it. But I'm sure the molecularly correct plastic parts also added to the tone. And of course the more colorful sunburst paint ads a more colorful tone.

This must be the best LP comparison video on the internet. So informative and straight to the point. Thanks so much. Keep up the good work. Love from Australia!

this guy is great, i love his attention to detail, the time he takes to explain things without any theatrics or hyperbole, he's a real joy to watch and to listen to... there are plenty of guitar youtubers out there who could take lessons in presentation skills from him.. ive subscribed and i hope to see more

I've been playing guitar for 61 years. My Les Paul's have included '52, '54, '69 fretless wonder '70 deluxe, '75 standard and '06 studio models. They were all different. I don't consider any of them better than the other. None were bad, just different. I will say that the '52 was the most different and for me a little less enjoyable to play because of the tail piece. Great video! Now I know the difference in a standard and a custom shop.

the CS Sounds woodier, bluesier to my ears:
The Std, more modern
But...finaly ...your hands and feeling make them both sound great!👏👍

Great information. I did not know that there were differences in the truss rod installation from the reissue custom shop and production guitars.

This is so informative. It confirms and dispells so much that is out there that we can not visually compare because it's just hearsay on forums.

It's really great to have somebody go into the details that has actually seen and felt an original late 50's Burst and then picked the differences between the current production models

What I really appreciated was the objective approach you too to it

I use to think there was no difference until I bought my 58 Reissue, there is definitely something different in both the feel and resonance of the historic spec guitars, whether or not it is worth the extra cost is up to the individual.🤘😎🎸

Been playing 32 years guitar and had several Gibson les paul standard, classic and studio amaaaazing guitars and had several R8’s one R9 and now R0 and believe me you can’t compare the historic reissues are .Anyhow in my opinion Gibson’s are still the best guitars in the world 🤘🏻

Heres my thing. You want a late 50's burst, get a custom shop. You just a good old Les Paul standard that is gonna do the job done, get a standard production model. Ultimately those tiny differences aren't gonna make a difference once you record you guitar parts or plug it into an amp and pedals. Just cause its more expensive, doesn't always mean its gonna be better.

Really enjoyed your comments. Earlier today I compared a standard and CS Goldtop. I found the best way to compare their sound was playing one or two chords in repeated succession on each and to discern the difference. The key however is to turn the amp OFF, and listen to the difference in resonance and depth. The CS takes the gold medal. Oh, have to say the P90 pups take the trophy too.

Would like to hear the gold top with the pickups from the 2016 standard so we could see how much of that 2016 sound was from the body and what was from the pickups.

Fun video. The Standard sounded good, but the CS sounded amazing. The single note stuff on CS was clear and crisp. And your playing; great as always.

During my playing career from 1969 until 1978, I owned five Les Paul Goldtop, 56 Goldtop, 58 Standard Sunburst, 68 Reissue Goldtop & 69 LP Custom. Except for the Custom with the ebony fingerboard and quite thin neck profile, and though I didn’t know why, there were distinct differences in feel and sound for the other four. With all of those guitars, I used Fender amps (Blackface Twin, Pro Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, & Tan Cabinet Bassman) and Fender R&R 10-46 strings and basically thought everything sounded the same. While the “feel” was a bit different due to neck widths, I thought they all sounded very similar. For me, I believe it was because of the “feel” coming thru my hands and fingers and what I heard thru my ears. Just my hands-on take and what I remember now that I’m 76 years old. BTW: wonderful video.

I like the fact that there are differences between the models. I have a standard, but because it is nothing special, I have no problem with experimenting with different bridges, tailpieces, mounting hardware or wiring. For me it’s about making it my own. Great video!

I think it's the custom buckers having a big role in a small difference in tone.

I have a 50's standard gold top, and a 59 custom shop. My Standard actually sustains better than my custom, but in that way that doesn't mater in a real world application. I keep hemming and hawing about getting custombuckers for my standard. At the same time, I love my standard the way it is. There is a difference between the two, the custom is special in its own way, but so its the standard. Maybe a good a "good one." Don't care. Love em both. Keep em both!
