Don't know if I could tell a difference. But it doesn't matter I just got to listen to that beautiful solo 4 times in a row

I liked the 50’s in all the demos. It sounded more articulate. The gain tone on the 50’s on the bridge pickup was simply awesome. The articulation and warmth actually blew my mind away. Gibson finally got it right. It’s hard to believe before they booted Henry the 2019 Standard had push pull pots and dip switches with over 500 sound combinations. I bet none of them sounded so beautiful as the 50’s which is a real Les Paul. Well done Gibson and excellent playing I might add.

While I was able to pretty clearly discern that they sounded "different", I thought they both sounded great, no bad choice. Great video and demo and really excellent playing.

Came here for the guitars, stayed for the player!

Standard 50’s is like getting a production R9. Amazing value - amazing guitar.
What a great demo 👍

I was set to drop $7, 000 today on a R9 in Austin. Instead, I walked out of GC with a used 50’s for UNDER $2, 000 before taxes. Beautiful flame cherry burst top. It played and sounded great. Very little wear. I’d say a 8.5 out of 10. I couldn’t pass it up.
The R9 will have to wait a little longer.

Groovy comparison! To my closed eyes and ear buds the 59 Historic had better clarity, notes sang, overall tone was much better (imo). Obviously, there’s quite a disparity in price ;). Perhaps the Custom Buckers installed in the Std 50s, might be a closer resemblance (?). Keep up the good work! 🤙

To be honest the Historic model sounds closer to the new Les Paul Standard 60's model with the hotter Burstbucker '61 pickups. I still like the overall balance of bass and treble and that warm clear chime of the Standard 50's even is this comparison. The bridge pickup is less harsh sounding on the Standard 50's to my ears compared to the thinner sounding Historic bridge pickup. But the Historic does have a bassier and throaty resonance. Both sound great nonetheless. And especially considering the huge price different in the guitars the new Original series Standards are pretty impressive. Thanks Gibson. Finally you've listened to us!

I own the 50's Standard and just TRYING get a feel for the R9...custom buckers vs burst. Tone-wise? I am having a difficulty in the EXTRA +3G in price difference. I think I got a HUGE value with the reorganization Gibson had and the product they are now producing. Throw in some drums, bass, vocals, keys, and rhythm...and I believe that my 50's Standard will kick just nicely without the VOS label. Thoroughly enjoyed this shoot-out between these two great guitars!

After watching this demo... I know this is for a '59 but I was considering the current production '58 non-aged Standard. I've owned (2) '58 Re-Issues that never felt like home to me so I ended up selling them. I ended up buying the 2021 '50s Standard and I can honestly say it blows my former 58's both away. In tone, feel, build quality, components, hardware, playability and in every way one might measure a guitar by. I saved about half of what the current production 58 sells for, so, thanks to this video, I ordered online from a dealer and couldn't be happier with this LP.

Great comparison, well done!
Sound wise there is really not much difference between those two (when listening on studio monitors). This 50s Les Paul really is a good value.

I agree with an earlier comment that when played clean there is a difference. The historic has a silkier smooth attack and the 50’s is a little more “in your face” but it’s VERY subtle. I think the big difference is in the craftsmanship and some of the detail finish work (hide glue etc...). I’ve owned Custom Shop reissues and now that Gibson has eliminated chambered bodies in the standard and have essentially built a “non-Custom Shop” version of an R9, the value is incredible. I’d buy one of these but then grab some vintage T-tops from the 70’s and be done for about $2, 600 all in and have EASILY an equal guitar.

I just watched a blind test of a 59 reissue vs a real 59 and I couldn’t tell the difference. Now I’ve watched this and realised the standard offers just as much bang as the reissue. This is great news for my wallet lol

Subscribed because of the way review is presented. What a great playing style. Spoke to my heart!

Is it just me or the 59 Historic Custom is driving the amp? If so, then those pickups are hot af

Man, the custom shop guitars start around six grand here in Canada. An R9 would probably start around 8 I think. The 50s standard is still a great guitar and really amazing. The sound is fuller and clearer on the custom shop, but still - the 50s standard still sounds amazing.
