I think that Luke still had that boyish naivety and he was out for revenge for his father and Obi-Wan. He had little knowledge of the Force and was cocky, so I buy it.

I also think its perfectly fine they fight before Empire Strikes Back and I wouldn't call the canon version a Lightsaber duel more like Luke's clumsy first attempt to fight the DARK LORD OF THE SITH who killed his father from a certain point of view, which is basically false as ANAKIN never truly died until Return of the Jedi! I mean VADER yoinks it out of his hand with the FORCE and its once again only thanks to the assistance of Han (& company) that VADER loses it and Luke is able to retrieve it! It's a perfectly fine first face to face encounter and nice to see VADER recognize his old companion, the YOUNGLING SLAYER 9000 and even wield it alongside his JEDI SLAYER 9001 (CAUSE IT'S OVER 9000! Remember kids the late Akira Toriyama was a noted STAR WARS fan so making IT'S OVER 9000 references is perfectly fine when talking about STAR WARS!)!"

Splinter of The Minds Eye was a great book. I read it 10 years ago and loved it. I may have to get back into reading my Star Wars books. I bought alot of them years ago in hardback and they have been on the shelf waiting………..for me to read them!

This story is completely unnecessary. That's the entire problem with Disney canon. This completely undermines Empire Strikes Back and the weight of Luke and Vader meeting for the first time. Splinter of the Mind's Eye was barely canon, too. Many people argued that it shouldn't be included and I'm fairly sure I remember it being put into a legends category before disney even took over.
