In the words of Pratchett: "Most problems that couldn't be solved with magic could be solved with six foot of solid oak."

calling them tree bones is very spooky

I always thought of it like
Wizards: use an item to channel magic like staffs
Sorcerers: use, spells to channel magic, like a spell book
mages: use runes to channel magic
Witches: uses nature magic, channel by the body.

My interpretation was that powerful magic hurts the user, and casting hundreds of spells a day would wear someone down pretty quickly, so staffs are used to essentially absorb the stress of magic, so if a staff looks very worn down and damaged, it means it's doing it's job.

Only a 2:2 ratio of bots this time.
I like the spelleater at the end: "magic trees for lunch"

Same reason why some people use guitar picks instead of their fingers.

I had a Sorcerer who used a polished, jet-black ball of Onyx approximately 3 inches in diameter, and I did ask the DM if he could have two spares just in case, she said absolutely, that's fine. Well at one point we get searched, our stuff taken, I tell the DM I probably still have my two spare Arcane Foci. She says, they did a very thorough pat-down, all you have is the clothing on your backs. I reply, well, they patted me down, yes, but you said nothing of a cavity search.

Also, it acts like an antenna focusing the magic

Staffs are also a good test. If something if immune to being whacked with six feet of solid oak, it’s probably immune to magic as well.

That was a reference
GNU Terry Pratchet.

A theatrical flourish of a wand is half of being a wizard the other half is staff self defense

There's also the fact that, depending on which material the wand/staff/conduit of magic, it gives different potency for different things.

The stick shape is because most of the original movements are based on types of wepons and how we'd go through movements or poses. Usually following swords, whips, or spears.

All of which can also be used as conduits of magic.

To my mind the staff/Wand is reinforcing and binding the casters magic to be precise and easier to handle.
In Harry Potter it is shown that Harry casts magic without a wand at the start of the first movie. So it IS possible there too. The only downside in that lore is that it’s way more difficult and therefore umcontrollable.

My D&D character had two prosthetic legs so she used a stick as a mobility aid and a magic staff at the same time

That tree bone is a magical focus, pointy things are easier to focus on. That said, sometimes they use amulets, holy objects (eg crucifix), crystals, etc. whatever connects.

In the Libriomancer series, over using magic will char the item. The MC overused his visual magic, seeing the magic, and his vision suffered and the damage is immune to magic(it simply flows around like water around rocks). A sorcerer mentioned exactlt the staff thing. If they overuse magic, better the staff to char that your hand

Also, if you need to, you can break a staff in 2 and double cast!

My thinking is that, like wands, staffs act as conduits for magic. The reason for that is while the human body can conduct magic, it’s probably dangerous to do so directly so something like a stick gives magic something to flow through safely.

Wands seem really ballsy now compared to staves. Having magic that could go wrong so close to you seems irresponsible.
