*Remove screws and lower case*
Me : Easy enough, time to upgrade to 8GB
*Detach batteries*
Me : On second thought, 4GB is still fine.

NOTE: People should be aware that upgrading the Logic Board (buying an installing a new one with the 8GB RAM), for a mac [mid-2013] from a 4GB i5 processor - to a 8GB i7 processor - can very possibly end up with your computer unable to read your Solid State Drive (SSD), and your data being unaccessible.

This does not mean your data is erased, but a new logic board is configured differently and cannot immediately read your SSD.

Hence, BACK UP YOUR DRIVE FIRST. If you go through that process, you may need to extract the data, wipe the SSD, reinstall MacOS X, the upgrade to the newest OS X, then re-download your old data onto the SSD.

Good luck, it is doable, but it is not so simple as swapping out and swapping in - if you are not soldering in the new RAM, etc. onto your old logic board.

As a maker, working with hot air desolder/solder techniques was something I had to become comfortable with if I intended to do prototyping of scale projects before sending out designs for production runs. At this point, I have no doubt upgrading soldered on memory in the Mac lineup will be straightforward enough (hadn't opened Macbook to evaluate, but this video shows that there's really nothing much different than any other air soldering work).
Assuming Apple still wants to stay in the computer business (it's not clear that they do) this trend will likely reverse if PCs that remain upgradeable (not all are, some also have gone the solder-on route) significantly cut into Apple's computer sales.
But then, Apple may not be thinking of remaining in the laptop business.
With phones and pads becoming as powerful (and sometimes more?) than laptops - it's possible laptops will be as extinct as dinosaurs soon enough.
Things change.
Oh well.
