There is no substitute for physical Ram. Up to and including Windows 7 it was recommended that your paging file size should be 1.5 x your physical ram. Post Windows 7 OS are handled differently and managed by the OS. Page file operations are limited by the data transfer rate (speed) of the mechanical drive, and can in now way speed up actual ram.
Adjusting or increasing the size of a paging file does not necessarily increase your Ram or speed up your computer. It can actually slow down file and program operations by increasing too many frequent paging requests . General rule of thumb is to stick with Windows recommendations.

Virtual memory is just memory from your storage drive, it actually depends on what type your storage drive is, if it’s a HDD, it’s going to be very bad, you won’t be getting any extra performance, since HDDs are very slow, something like an SSD, would show better results, there is really no “free” RAM, RAM sticks are VERY fast, I mean incomprehensible speeds, that even the fastest SSDs are no match to, so it’s actually like a 0.02% increase in performance, and also this stresses your storage drives.

If you got an upgradable pc/laptop buy physical RAM only take the risk if your pc/laptop isn't upgradable

Because you're doing this using disk, the boosted 'ram' won't be as fast as if it were hardware ram. Because you'll have to wait for your disk. What's the slowdown factor? Is it noticeable?

Does this have any adverse effects on a PC? I doubt it’s just more RAM with no other issues.
