Wish I would have had this back in 92. I was jumped by a gang Rubbermaid xl totes. The fast ones with the wheels too.

Swap the nut for a decent padlock (have the key with you to prove planned usage) and you are good to go.

ALERT! Canada has just banned purchase of nuts and string!

I spent 28yrs in the Army traveling the world. I always used a wad of coins (four rolls of pennies is about right) and a sturdy athletic sock. Tie the knot so that you have five to six inches between the coins and the knot. You do not need or want this thing long. Makes a very good blackjack. Your target area is the face / head / neck. Speed is important. A hardcover book is also a great fighting tool. Use the corners for the eyes, the spine of the book with an upward strike to break the nose, or the corners to the temple.

For those who worry about being arrested for these kind of weapons or use of them please remember the old saying I would rather be judged by 12 then carried out by 6 😊

My friend was robed and beaten twenty five years ago, He liked to fish, so he went out and got a four once sinker and a stainless steel 18" leader. Went for walks at night in the same area where he had been robbed and wouldn't you know it, not long after criminals started showing up at emergency rooms with fractured skulls its funny how things work out that way, I've been carrying fishing tackle ever sense.

Protip: Don't run the string through the hole in your object and tie it off. Instead just keep it a loop of cordage. And then when you want to use it pass part of the loop through and then pull the other end back through it. That way you can keep it as two separate innocuous items most of the time and put it together easily when needed. (And needless to say my preference is a padlock.)

First and foremost your first line of self defense is your brain, situational awareness and trusting your gut. 2 basic fighting skills, " anything you can pick up is a weapon, situational awareness" 3 always keep your distance from people you don't know. 4 training. If you can't use your tools properly they're useless. 5 blend in make yourself small and unnoticed. 6 if you do have to defend yourself, strike fast, strike hard, strike with as much violent intent as possible your life may depend on it, and you might not get a second chance to do so. These aren't things I made up on my own. I have friends that were combat service members, police officers and martial arts practitioners, and I grew up pretty rough. These are just things I've learned from them over 25 years or and it's served me well, I'm no badass, know it all or guru. Not trying to sound that way or sound like an asshole or anything. Text can't convey feelings, tone, or inflexion, I say all of this humbly and respectfully, maybe there's some advice in there someone can use or someone can correct me on and let me add this. Violence can be and sometimes is like a car wreck, you never see it coming self-defense is like a seatbelt it's not about the odds it's about what's at stake.

For the people who are insulting this guy in the comments, this vid is really about how to get a weapon into places or countries where weapons are banned, yes knives, guns, work but they are not allowed everywhere.

I was unimpressed by that. I like some commenter's idea about using a padlock much better!

Heavy duty steel carabiners are sold at any hardware store, as heavy as the nut or more. Reason for having, to hang your keys. Get a nylon neck lanyard for an ID, (often free) and you are good to go. Might cost a bit more but passes any inspection.

I use standard thread at home and Metric when traveling overseas. Pro tip: use a lock nut so nobody can steal it.

I thought about you can also carry around a can of Tuna in a plastic bag. It definitely can do some damage. Just swing the bag with the can in it.

when I bike commuted rode home at night, my cable lock was not in my bag but around my neck and back, so a cable with a built in lock at hand also my bike light was the strongest on the market in terms of brightness, a flash in the eyes and hes night blind long enough , no permanent harm.. my Dad who grew up in a tough industrial area taught me to use my boots, legs are longer and stronger and hands can take damage [which I learned later the hard way] stay safe

Real lesson (learned from self defense training) EVERYTHING is a weapon. Be aware of what's around you and know how to use it properly 👊

I recommend tie cord first, then pass doubled cord through nut and pass cord through that loop. Hope you can decipher my instructions. That way cord is double strength around nut, and you can easily undo the cord without untying

I live in California and fortunately, it is still legal to use aerosol wasp spray as a defense. It has a large, robust, and accurate spray range of 15 - 20 feet. Whole lot better than pepper gel spray.

John Wick uses a pencil. They're even cheaper.

I've seen orbital eye sockets get broken with one of these. BUT you have to get away as fast as possible because you will go to jail in a lot of countries for defending yourself.
