Knife attacks happen fast and sometimes with little time to react. Too often do I see "knife defense" techniques for disarming if someone attacks you in a specific manner. We should instead be focused on how to control the attacking arm and the attacker before we active our John Wick techniques...

A realistic knife attack defense is to run away as fast as you can

As my sensei always said:

"The true fighter continually prepares to be the strongest.
If the opponent draws his knife, the true fighter immediately shows him that he is the fastest in running."

There is a very old saying that has synonyms in all continents and eras, but goes like this:
"When two people fight with knives, the loser dies in the fight, the winner dies in the ambulance."

I think decades of action movies have dulled the senses of the average person as to how deadly a knife attack is.

I was homeless for 2 1/2 years(I was an addict for over 11 years) and in May of 2021, I was stabbed 7 times by another homeless guy who robbed me after I gave him food and a cigarette. He had planned to ask me for those things to get my guard down. I fought him, neither of us got the upper hand, but we both fell on the ground at one point and he stabbed me over and over. Once in the arm, 3 times in the right knee, and 3 times in the back. Long story short, he was caught 5 mins after he took off and got 8 years in prison. He only did a lil over 2 years tho and got out in September 2023. 🤷I got clean shortly afterwards. I've been clean awhile now and have a job, a house, and a truck, so besides being stabbed, I think I came out of it better.

Rule 1. Don't be where shit goes down.
2. If you find yourself where shit goes down, leave.
3. If shit starts to go down, run.
4. If you can't run, fight.

Scariest thing about being stabbed is it doesn't hurt at all at first moments and the amount of blood even from shallow stab wound is horrific to see... Stabbing survivor 😅

My martial art teacher always told us: "If your opponent has a knife, don't even try. Just run."

People don't understand that violence isn't what you see in a movie.

You can't control a knife attack.
Run.
Keep distance

The scariest thing about a knife attack is how accessible a knife is. Any kitchen will have knives, which means anyone can be a potential killer. We don't view knives the same way as guns because we regard it as an everyday tool & yet it's as deadly as any firearm.

I do jiu jitsu and one day a new kid asked the coach how to fight a guy with a knife. The coach burst into tears laughing and told him “run. Even if you have a knife you run. The only time you would fight a guy with a knife is when you have a gun”

A medically retired navy seal once said, if you really want to see just how low your chances of survival in a knife fight would be then train with a marker and see how drawn on you get.

Step 1: Create distance.
Step 2: Draw gun.

Saw a knife attack outside of a pub once in my teenage years. I froze completely. I didn’t realise the reality of violence up until that point and how a knife attack would actually look like. Blood everywhere

My defence instructor always said don't let anyone suspicious near you because it's too late if they can reach you, and if you see a knife, run, it's not the movies
