Well this is kind of the standard “Germany” list.
A few recommendations are good:

1. Middle Rhine Valley: yes! Very beautiful and a must see. Lots of castles there.

2. Black Forest: Yes, but I recommend to see Triberger waterfalls as they are the highest in Germany.

What is HIGHLY missing on this list (and you will regret one day if you miss out):

1. Lake Constance: Also called the “Swabian Sea” because of its size and almost year round mild and sunny climate. Lots of beautiful old cities around, excellent seafood and one of the top wine growing regions of the country. Borders 3 countries and 2 german states. Perfect for a swimming/ water-sports holiday or for bike rides/ hiking. The Alps are super close by. Meersburg and Überlingen are the nicest cities in my opinion.

2. Kaiserstuhl: Some excellent wine is grown and produced there. Warmest place in Germany and therefore known as “German Tuscany”. Local food is great and- due to the location right on the border- very french-influenced 😁👍 Very unique nature and wildlife (some plants and animals do only exist here), perfect for hikers.


3. Hambacher Schloss: The place where german democracy was born. You cant miss out on that. The castle itself is just a partly rebuilt ruin but it has a museum and was crucial in german history.

4. Breitachklamm: Something like a very narrowly valley that consists of rocks and small waterfalls. The hiking trail goes strait over the water. It was moved from ice in the past and than the river created the “valley”. Just google it, you will be impressed!

5. Regensburg: The best city besides Heidelberg for all Old City Lovers! Many german cities where bombed during the war and rebuilt in modern styles. Regensburg survived the war without major damage and does have a history that reaches back to the Roman Empire times. Not half as touristic overruned with tourists as little Rothenburg (I should fight for it as my dad is from there but its my honest opinion 😁).

6. Wartburg/ Eisenach: The historical castle where Martin Luther translated the Bible to german first. I think you know what grew out of that in Central and Western Europe 😁 For those who like history this is a must. As its in a mountain area, its also good for hikes.

7. Watten Sea: I highly recommend to visit the North Frisian Islands or Helgoland. The islands have some amazing white sand beaches and the sea leaves the beaches every day during the ebb for as long as some kilometers sometimes. They offer a lot of walks on the dry sea ground. Of course there is hundreds of rare animals living in that place, as this is a rare condition. I personally would love to do a flight over the area one day. It looks just like the Caribbean with hundreds of islands from above.

8. Sächsische Schweiz: Big forests in a mountainous and quite rocky area. Great for hikes with amazing views. Unluckily some parts burned down in the last summer during a big forest fire, so I don’t know if everything is open right now.

9. Spreewald or Mecklenburgische Seenplatte: Very little touched forest that is crossed by canals. Both places are similar and not far from Berlin. Its one of the best places to see original nature and take a river boat ride.

10. Moselle Valley: This is even better than the Rhine Valley. Dozens of castles on the borders. The steepest wine yards of the world around the river. Definitely an amazing landscape. I think this might be the best place in Germany to make a road-trip during the summer just along the river the whole time.

I could put 10, 000 more places here, but this is really what I would consider “must-sees” in Germany that aren’t famous. Most of the famous places are boring in my opinion. Munich has some nice spots, but I wouldn’t spend more than 1 day there. If you really want to experience Germany as it is with all its regions over 1, 000 kilometers from the north to the south, you should take yourself at lest 2 weeks.

I visited Koln Cathedral in 1993 when I was a school kid. Sorry to say I have never been back to Germany (I always chose sun vacations). But I would like to go to Germany again
