My triton went from 8.8l per 100ks, to 14l per 100 with 35’s 4 inch lift 400 kg on the back. Still holds 6th gear but not up hills. These small motors are actually pretty decent, but I still love the thong slapping my 07 79 makes.

This is awesome news. 3 weeks till mine arrives.

You cannot rely on the odometer to calculate fuel economy because changing the diameter of the tires also changes the speed at which the vehicle will go. On the odometer it may appear that you are going 100kmh but in reality you are at different speed

Wow, that is surprisingly good!

70 series are awesome. If I was FIFO still I would definitely buy two or three of them every six months

Get’K02s’ for the win. BFGs are awesome!

Would be interested in a comparison using 35s considering that the majorly driving land cruisers are sitting on 35s taking into consideration pre-reg GVM upgrades etc. understandably there is still a very large portion sitting on 33s even 32s but would still be good to see what a slightly heavily modified version could do

Drive it up to the Kimberley and it will jump to 15-16L per 100. All my vehicles and Jeeps I've had and driven up here from Perth all have fuel increases when I get near Broome and stay that way until I drive back down south, goes down to 11Lish

Well Ronny, I bailed out of my 2020gxl 79 and bought a hilux to see if i could live with the 2.8 and auto. Guess what? I can. Im living the 9.2/100, the cup holders 🤣. I paid $73000 and to buy the new 4 cyl 70 same specs is $107, 000. Im struggling to justify spending the extra $30000+ for a live front axle and better pay load. However your comprehensive reviews are slowly changing my mind. I may wait for Andrews troopie build before I commit 🤔

Sound like they got the ratios perfect in the transmission foe this one then 😊

Great news! And... Even better than it seems!

If you haven't had the new tire size set in the vehicle's ECU, the odometer's readings are inaccurate; since they're based on tire rotations, with the larger tire, each rotation covers more ground, so you're going further and faster than the odometer thinks you are.

If the difference vs stock is 15%, for instance, the vehicle is calculating fuel consumption as litres per 115 km, and at a higher average speed than you meant to go (126 kmh instead of 110 kmh), so the increase in fuel consumption is even less than what the odometer calculated 👌

It would be cool to see another test using GPS speed and distances, and the good ol' (analogic) refill fuel consumption calculation method, to see what the real consumption is!

P.S. Beware of speeding tickets! 😜

Changing the tyre size changes the final gear ratio. You can change the diff gears to return the vehicle to the correct final ratio, or very near to it. Be sure you get you ecu updated.

How come Hilux does lose 6th with same engine and gearbox? Is it a different ratio in the diff or another factor?

Lost 6th gear? Will changing the final drive diff ratio gives me back usable 6th gear?

33s on the prado only impacted the fuel consumption and the speedo which was actually spot on now, not slightly lower.

Is a different diff gear required to compensate?

Is the gearing different? Good improvements though

Will 35 inch tyres change fuel consumption and Sixth gear dramatically?
