Now, the truth of the matter is that most cases of high blood pressure have no clear underlying cause, they have no clear etiology. This is primary or essential hypertension. But about 5 to 10% of the cases of high blood pressure do have an underlying cause, secondary hypertension. Now, if you have high blood pressure and it is actually caused by an underlying condition that could be potentially treatable or reversible, don't you want to know? Today, I'm going to give you 10 common causes of high blood pressure.

Facts About Hypertension
Hypertension is the leading cause of heart disease, strokes, and kidney failure. And about 45% of Americans have high blood pressure, and many of them don't quite have it managed well. Most hypertension is due to primary or essential hypertension, meaning that there is no clear cause, no underlying etiology to be identified. But about 5 to 10% of the cases of high blood pressure actually do have an underlying cause or secondary hypertension, and that's what we'll be talking about today.

10 Causes of High Blood Pressure:

1. Thyroid Disease
2. Obstructive Sleep Apnea
3. Chronic Kidney Disease
4. Cushing's Syndrome
5. Conn Syndrome
6. Brain Tumor
7. Coarctation of the Aorta
8. Pregnancy
9. Obesity
10. Drugs

In addition to the 10 causes of high blood pressure I just gave you, there are many more, including pheochromocytoma, or a high sodium diet. In fact, please watch my video on high sodium foods to avoid for more information. To prevent high blood pressure, you definitely want to have a good relationship with your physician, so definitely consult your doctor.

You also want to implement some excellent lifestyle choices like regular exercise and eating healthy foods. Make sure you drink plenty of water and have a low sodium diet. And very importantly, if you are at risk for having a secondary cause, you want to make sure you explore the underlying causes.

I'm an African American male. I'm 56 years old, 5'10 and 158 pounds. I have always had a regular exercise program, but when I turned 55 my blood pressure just shot up. I started doing a little research, and discovered that the foods that I eat have a direct effect on my blood pressure. As a process of elimination, oatmeal was a huge factor. I stopped consuming oatmeal, and my blood pressure dropped drastically. Popcorn! I ate a lot of popcorn. I cut that out. My BP dropped even more. Wheat bread, was another factor. Alcohol was also a big factor in my BP. I took on a Keto lifestyle by significantly reducing my sugar, carb and alcohol intake, and now my BP stays around 125/81. It's not perfect, but it is a long way from 178/96.

Thank you, Dr. Frita. The Lord Jesus bless you.

thank you for this wonderful video Dr Frita! I have a question for you and I hope you can answer. What do you think about garlic as a remedy for high blood pressure? Do you think it could have a value as an adjunctive treatment and also a way for patients to be less dependent on pills?

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge about kidney disease and high blood pressure, I have both. I’ve had several heart attacks and I have 10 stents in my heart. My Cardiologist has never explained to me why I have the problems that I have. If I don’t know what questions to ask why doesn’t he tell me what I need to do to prevent my problems? I would make changes from my past habits, eating foods that I grew up on. Anyway I’ll begin making changes in my eating habits today. Thank you so much👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️🙏🏽always for you sharing your knowledge to try and save a life.

I have been diagnosed with Conns Syndrome Primary Hyperaldosteronism. For anyone with this the key ways I've found to combat it is a low sodium diet, no alcohol, no caffeine, plenty of water and plenty of exercise. After exercise my BP can drop to under 120/80. I'm on BP drugs but it's now under control after years of investigation.
