Winter Sowing is hard to mess up, but here is what I do and my top tips:

1. If you don’t have seeds that need cold stratification; you don’t actually have to do this in winter.

2. Collect jugs and prep: pull off labels, drill holes (don’t like power tools? Check out my red solo cup reel for the method I usually use) and cut in half almost all the way— leave yourself a little hinge.

2. Moisten soil — potting soil make it yourself or
buy it, but make sure it’s nice a damp

3. Try and only plant 4-5 seeds in each container for a 2L, 6-8 for a gallon. (Separating seedlings will suck less later)

4. Cover to the depth on the seed packet with a fluffy soil… I used seed starting mix— you can sift potting mix… but make sure it’s moistened too.

5. Label with a weather proof, sun proof marker!! I like garden line markers

6. Set in a sunny spot and ignore — your little greenhouses will do the rest of the work. (Note: you may need to water if you get a freakishly dry and hot week).

Are you trying winter sowing this year? What are you growing?

We did this literally in the 80’s! I won 4-h competitions using this method! It also helped that my Ma was a master gardener!!!

Oh my gosh. I never thought about keeping my strawberry containers to use for seed starting. That’s so perfect. I’m going to try this today.

This is a great way to get seeds started! I'm in Minnesota and have been doing this for over 15 years ❤

Oh my goodness! THANK YOU! I have a few gallon water bottles and I was just going to recycle them on Monday. Now, I'm going to use them like this instead. ❤

Milk jugs are never recycled. Even when you put them in with the recyclables they are sorted out at the plant and sent to the landfill.

Are you doing this right before the last frost or can you do it earlier? Which zone are you doing this in?
