10 Secrets Hotels Don't Want You to Know!

Hotels use all sorts of tricks to get you into their rooms and maximize their profit, even if it means a little fib here or there. Here at Destination Tips, we've provided a list of some of those "secrets" you may want to be aware of.

1. Marketing Hype
“Sun, sea, and sand” shouldn’t mean images found in your hotel room’s decorative paintings, and “ocean view” is a worthless term if you have to crane your neck to catch a glimpse. So be wary of "enhanced truths" that are technically true but portrayed in a much more appealing way.

2. Bedbugs
Lots of hotels are plagued with these little critters, which can lurk in the bedding and latch on to unsuspecting guests. If there are no visible stains on them, hotel bedspreads aren’t cleaned. Bedbugs tend to cling to guests and when carriers stay in a room, you’re doomed.

3. Windows
Most modern hotels have windows that open a crack or not at all. Urban legend has it that this is to prevent people from jumping out, but it’s really just a cost-saving measure as too many customers carelessly leave the a/c on while the window is open.

4. Deaths
The next time you go to bed in your hotel room, just think—someone could have died there. This is one of the best-kept secrets in the hotel industry, to avoid negative publicity and hotel staff are forbidden to reveal room numbers or details.

5. No Rooms
Hotels always want to be fully-booked so they overbook all the time. If you show up and are turned down, you're pegged with the term “walking a guest” where, confirmed reservation or not, you’re royally screwed.

6. A Little Hotel Math
Basic pared down room rates are posted after hoteliers chop off a chunk of the actual price, then they sneak those unavoidable taxes and fees back on in the small print you don’t notice until you pay up. This kind of game makes hotels seem cheaper than they really are.

7. Safe Doesn’t Always Mean "Safe"
Don't forget that most hotels have master keys or a way for staff to get into room safes because lots of guests forget their code or lose their key, so these aren’t the most secure boxes out there.

8. Cheap Deals, Bad Rooms
Hotels earn the least profits from reservations made through internet discount sites. Know that the best rooms are often reserved for those guests who do the complete opposite and book directly through the hotel property.

9. Hotel Glasses Are Usually Dirty
The bathroom glass or cup by the ice bucket may look okay but it doesn’t mean they are freshly sanitized. Housekeeping rarely wash these thoroughly, and some might just give them a cursory wipe down with the same cloth used around the room. Yuck.

10. Free Last Minute Cancellation!
Hotels often charge a cancellation fee if you bow out less than 24 hours in advance. Want to avoid this?
Step one: Call the hotel’s front desk and postpone your booking to a few days later
Step two: After a few hours have passed, call again and request a cancellation of your later reservation. Cha-Ching! Money back in the bank.
"What sorcery is this?"
Easy really, doing it this way gives the hotel a new cancellation time on the new date, which makes the need to keep your deposit null and void. Boo-ya!

if you travel a lot, you can stay at the same hotel chain, and then get pointes you can use at an other date, and mady be a silver, gold, diamond... member wich give you some ekslusive thinges.

No not always be right off the top " I want my discount " a member of something... Instead ask about the monthly, weekend, or event specials if any.... When you want your membership discount right off the top they will say sure and give you your discount off "rack" rate....they never tell you their weekend special was $69.00
Instead you got your 10% member discount from rack rate of $199.99...

I stayed in an apartment overnight in Sofiya, Bulgaria. The charge was reasonable and I had a view of Mount Vitosha. Room service in Pakastani hotels will provide hashish but it is cheaper if you buy off s street dealer.

Don't ask for upgrades. Everyone is Diamond, Platinum, on their "honeymoon", etc. Instead ask for features you want. "A corner room, a room with a walk-in shower, ... Also, if you have stayed in the hotel before figure out which series of rooms have the amenities you want and ask for a specific room. Works like a charm.

Most hotels kinda suck but I've been to a hotel/apartment thingy in Sydney and it was good. 2 pools with spas, a couple of tennis courts, and nice views. It was bondi junction meriton apartments, if anyone wants to have a nice stay.

I work for a hotel, and if you try to move your reservation within the cancellation policy, you're going to get charged either way. Just FYI!

Im a Duty manager at a 4 star resort and i can tell you your cancellation trick at the end wont work at 90% of hotels and can get you blacklisted for trying. Notes are put on every reservation when there is a change within the cancelation period.

Now the moral of the story is don't go to hotels but if you go you die or get really sick I can't people don't clean hotel rooms
