I hope this short helps you chose which one of these 2 softwares you will like to start using.3Ds Max is a great professional tool that is used by many AAA studios and it can be used for modeling, animations, rigging, rendering and many other things. Studios use it for game development, visualizations, cinema and more.
Blender is free to use tool that has many awesome features and is slowly making its way to some studios. Currently, many of the bigger studios don't use it in their workflow, but they have some experiments teams that do. From my experience, most studios I've seen use it, is for the level/game designers make fast blackouts and showcase their ideas.

This is no where near fact, 3ds max has not had market share for film, vfx, or games for close to a decade now. While it is a modeling powerhouse and particularly fantastic for hard surface modeling. Maya on the other hand is the industry standard nowadays and will continue to be until Blender does much needed UX improvements and gets rid of it's development attitude of trying to make itself intentionally different. Blender is a fantastic tool but when it comes to industry pipelines there is a lot of inertia to fight against trying to dethrone Maya.
