As doctor passionate about skin care that delivers results and about well aging, I want to help you quickly and efficiently pick a skin care regime that works, by explaining the science behind skin and by sharing quick product reviews.
I am a big believer that creating a skincare routine that targets your specific concerns is not a matter of your budget. There are many great affordable brands out there: The Inkey List, Good Molecules, Geek & Gorgeous or pixi skincare to name a few of my favorites, and if you know how to combine them, you are well on your way to healthy and happy skin.
Healthy and happy skin does not mean "flawless" - whatever that might be. I have been struggling with acne, hyperpigmentation and postinflammatory erythema (PIH and PIE) for most of my adult life, and it took me a while to figure out that gentle is key. I went through a retinol damaged skin barrier, acne flare ups and sun damage until I finally reached my happy place: With Tretinoin, sunscreen and of course a red lipstick!

Thanks for your very thorough review of the possible benefits of fermentation. I personally use certain k- & j-beauty fermented skincare that, for me, have moisturizing and brightening benefits. But not all fermentation filtrate is created equal!

I’m glad you mentioned lactic acid. I think I’ll stick to more proven ingredients, including lactic acid.

Hi Dr Anne as someone with hypersensitive skin a lot of Korean beauty seems to work for me, due to their more gentle philosophy re skincare. I really like toners and essences for hydration in my permanently dehydrated/dry skin. Rosacea and eczema both cause a weakened moisture barrier and mean dehydration is a constant battle. It's much more affordable to layer up a hydrating toner/essence, than a small serum. Most fermented ingredients seems to work fine on me, obviously as long as the rest of the formulation doesn't contain fragrance/EO's or other irritating ingredients my skin hates. I have used quite a few and liked most of them. A few favourites are:
neogen micro ferment first essence
Missha time revolution first essence
Aqulabo kombucha toner
Benton fermentation toner
Laneige cream skin refiner
Scinic first essence
T'iam vita b5 toner
All of these contain fermented ingredients and all have been hydrating on the skin. I have never ventured into the really expensive essences either, as this is not where I want to spend the bulk of my skincare budget. I think there are some really good budget versions on the market though.
I have tried the EL night repair and it's fine, but the Lancome genefique and their new sensitive version are both extremely irritating on my skin, proving formulation really matters for me. Best wishes.

Thank you for this, very informative. Like everything in skincare, it's all marketing. I agree with you on SK ii being overpriced. Not sustainable long term use. I'm currently using Purito Galactonycin essence. There are also Missha and Secret Key first essences with galactomyces ferment more affordable. For fermented black tea try Dr Ceuracle black tea fermented essence toner or Kane Kombucha toner. Sending love from Chicagoland ❤❤❤

Fermented products seem to work very well on my skin. Especially products made with bifida, and Galactomyces.

The products I use with fermented ingredients are the Haruharu wonder black rice hylauronic toner and the Secret Key - Starting Treatment Essence which I believe is a good dup for SKII but about 1/10 of the price. The Secret Key essence also contains Galactomyces at 95%. Not sure a higher percentage is necessary better that the 90% for SKII as I appreciate ingredient benefits don't necessarily work in that way. I have never purchased SKII so can't actually provide any genuine comparison .

I think the most well-known dupe for the ridiculously expensive SK-II is the First Treatment Essence by Missha. They even designed the glass bottle to look like the SK-II. I've tried it in the past for a while but didn't notice any obvious benefit.

Hi Doctor Anne, I used Purito Galacto Niacin 97 which contains fermented Galactomisses . It was ok but could not tell if there was an improvement in my skin

The thing about SKII is that the concentration is 90% in the states, which means they aren’t just making the extract product super dilute and calling it 90% like Korean brands do

So in otherwords using a ferment essence like SKII MERELY helps your following skincare products sink in better??

Hi Dr Anne! I was reading about bee venom and found that melittin causes cell death, and plays a factor in how cancerous cells react to epidermal growth factor (Im not sure how normal cells are affected). In the Benton Snail Bee Skin, there is bee venom and a peptide that mimics epidermal growth factor. I was wondering how the two ingredients might interact, and also if bee venom is actually alright to put on your skin. Have an awesome day :)
