They were doing experiments living in an underground city to find an alternate dimension to escape this world where zombie apocalypse broke out.
One day they were successful but the dimension was very dangerous full of hostile creatures and harsh environment with modern technology like sculk sensors. The creatures from that dimension used resources from their dimension (like sculk sensors, catalysts blocks etc.) to alter the city and sent Wardens here to protect the portal. They also turned the portal off and killed people from this dimension who knew how to turn the portal on.
After some time some people again found the city and used the did some research. For survival they used wool so that Warden can't find them. But it didn't helped them for a long time. Eventually they were also killed.
Now as we know, Warden is guarding the portal and its city and no one knows how to open the portal.

I think, the ancient City was built by Ancient Builders, but then the Sculk Virus came and locked all of the Builders' souls in the sculk catalysts. But because the Builders build golems, that were strong enough to not get turned into Sculk, there are also Wardens, which are infected Golems.

The person who built it is someone by the name of Unkown or also known as LEC he's the one who started the experiments and made the portal. But the person who explored the ancient city is someone by the name of Steve. Steve is the main character and the only one who knows everything about his world like all the booms all the dimensions and all of the animals and all of the structures and what there ment for.

The antiant builders might of placed the carpet/wool and may of used the warden to kill the wither, but once the warden attacked them the survivers might have retreated to strongholds and the end.

Despite being incredibly dangerous, many Minecraft players are drawn to the ancient city and the Warden because of the valuable resources and treasures that are said to be hidden within its walls. However, only the bravest and most skilled adventurers are able to survive the dangers of the ancient city and the wrath of the Warden.

my theories are that the ancient builders built this place before the sculk and wardens invaded it, Ancient builders wanted to go to another dimensions to have more resources and explore more, they did it but the sculk and wardens came out of the portal and invaded it killing all life at the experiment, they built this underground to keep it secret and to keep the villagers safe from the danger that might erupt from there experiment

there are actually certain buildings that look like they were once living spaces, like the crumbling ruins with chests. it also doesn't really look like an experimental place, but we know people have found and attempted to explore the area, because of ladders, scaffolding, and camps, and i suspect its the illagers because camps contain the infamous wool colors found in mansions, and dark oak wood is used in scaffolding and bridge structures.

So he was a son of one of the ancient builders his mother learnt him how to build, mine, hunt and other things so he was a survivor after the ancient builders died so when he grew up he then herd the ancient city disk so he dug deep down and explored the place he also didn't have a house so he lived in other structures and explored every structure in Minecraft

I suspect when they opened the portal wardens came through and killed all of them and only the explorer's know the secret..

My version:

They build everything from normal materials from overworld like Stones or Wood, portal frame was made out of obsidian, they opened the portal with a magical sound after many experiments.
The Warden and materials that are in ancient city right now, are the part of new world that came out the portal and started killing overworld and expanding himselfwith XP from killed animals and peoples. Then a good Explorer decided to stop it. He started experiments on Wardens, he figured out that they are blind and they can only be able to find someone by sounds. He covered ancient city with Gray wool and many Stones to stop sounds to get in there. But portal was still opened and the only way to stop it was to break it from the other side, beacouse humans were too weak to destroy the frame. He jumped to the portal to turn it off. It worked, but He Got stuck inside the wardens dimension forever. Until we would find a way to control portal, and Save our hero....

My idea: The Ancient Builders came down here to flee from something, maybe the wither or something someone but even the animals who had the giant bones in the Overworld.

They built the Portal as an emergency exit if they had to escape, the warden was they’re protector and they had it to kill anything it heard.
