How I Make Tactics From Scratch

I meet so many people online and in person who are afraid to start making tactics on Football Manager, but it’s perhaps the most challenging and rewarding part of the game. If you manage a club, the tactic is your magnum opus, your masterpiece to get the best out of your players. This video will help you get started.

I am a simple man, I see thumbs up next to a tactic, I select that tactic.

What i love about Zealand is that he doesn't just give a good tactic like other YouTubers. He teaches you about the game and HOW to understand it better

There can never be enough Trequartistas, Liberos or Raundeuters.

the best instruction we can give to your team is, right when you giving talk to players in dressing room, click opposition and see if their wingers are the foot for cross( right wing, right foot best foot) on wing or other foot to cut inside (right wing, best foot left), then give team instructions on out of possession, if the wingers are to cross you put stop cross, if they wingers that cut inside to shoot, you put force opponent team play out side.

One thing I do and some may find it a bit crazy but during my most competitive pre season match, I’ll watch the full match to get a better understanding of how my tactic is working in action. Tends to really work for me because I can see gaps in areas of the field and areas where my players may be isolated in possession.

Cheers Zealand, this information was more important than the revision I should be doing

If you're a beginner to FM tactics building, I suggest a basic 4-4-2 with minimum instructions that aim to keep the ball and work it into the box! Regroup when you lose the ball and counter when you win it back. Pass into space, high line and press, stay on your feet! Simple!
I am a sucker for 4-4-2 and I blame that on me being nearly 60-years old, as that was the default tactic when I grew up and played the game. So pick a tactic you've played in!

@zealand very informative video for a new player. I've been wanting to build a tactic around having super strong midfielders. I think you've helped explain the 3 basic tactics i can build and what to look for in my wingers and fullbacks. You should make a few more targeted, shorter videos about tactics you've had success with, what player types you need to pull them off and what not. Thanks again!

I've actually come to really appreciate the squad planner, and use it all the time.

It really shocks me how little, people use the squad planner. im awful at keeping track of what positions people can play so just using it as a depth measurer is really helpful. it’s often how I figure out when my squad needs more beef or more quality

I made my first one recently and it’s a 5-1-3-1 direct counter attack where I just tell my team to smash it long and hope for the best (kinda route 1😅)
It’s working as well just won Ligue 1 with Metz and finished 6th in the current seasons champions league phase. all an average of 38% possession in the league

I just try to make a compromise between what is possible to do and what isn't possible to do with a certain irl tactic. Take Inzaghi's Inter for example: it's impossible to fully recreate their fluid tactics, like for example making mezzalas or midfielders in general come back to the defense line with the cbs moving up to midfield and all those fluid movements between players. However, I tried to focus more on the player's movements in general when certain players are in certain spaces (for example the wide cbs attacking the half spaces or the deep-lying striker dropping into midfield) and I kid you not it is the best tactic I've ever created (and the most close to the irl one too). You won't ever be able to fully recreate any irl tactic because an engine won't ever support all these kinds of inputs at the same time: therefore, at least for me, you should be focusing on which movements players have to do when they are in certain positions of the pitch. At least, that is how it worked for me.

Im a man utd fan . but for years I literally just watched Arsenal invincible vid and just applied what the vid said to the tactic . an d for years I always had an insanely op tactic . especially when you could choose to be fluid . i might go back and try that again .

Why is it not recommended to have both a mezzala and an inside forward on the same side of the pitch? To my understanding, in this combination, mezzala will make overlapping runs acting almost as a wing-back in possession. I currently use this combination and it works wonders for me. The only thing to mention is that it's worth considering playing your full-back in a defensive role in that situation - so you don't have two players making the same runs in the attack. Inverted full-back/wing-back or simply a full-back-on support works great.
