Jess speaking:
Some of the most common symptoms of ADHD are:
lack of motivation, difficulty with focusing and attention, insomnia, and sudden dark moods, or mood swings

These are all also common signs of depression.

While it's totally normal to relate to signs of a specific condition on TikTok, a lot of conditions share symptoms. So it's important to talk to a counsellor, or a psychologist, or your doctor, about any symptoms you might be having.

Sometimes ADHD and depression can look really similar.
Especially from the outside.

In the US, Psychology Today's "Therapist Finder" is a really good place to start.

I was convinced for the past 20 years or so that I suffer from depression, but the therapist who confirmed to me my AD(H)D diagnose last week (yay!) told me, that I am actually "only" emotionally disregulated and that I feel everything enhanced and unfiltered compared to "normal" people. I do have depressive moments that really feel shitty, but it never lasts long enough at a time to actually be depression.

And then there's real depression that comes from failing at everything because of undiagnosed ADHD. Now I'm diagnosed and I hope I can do something about it.

It's fun when you have both :) professionals who understand both are seriously important

I've been wondering why I keep getting into an extremely dark mood, but it never really lasts as long as I think it would

I finally had the guts (and time) to get an appointment to get checked for ADHD and Anxiety later this month. I’ve always suspected of ADHD but never had enough info and never had the attention span to research, and also thought that I’m just “lazy” because that’s what I’ve always been told. I’m nervous to go to the appt but hopefully it’ll be relieving for me to finally find out what I’ve been experiencing for years.

My psychiatrist thought I had depression and anxiety along with adhd, after taking welbutrin and telling him I'm pretty sure I'm not depressed, he concluded that I just have ADHD lol

I spent 20 years on 8 different antidepressants before I was diagnosed with ADHD

And, of course, you can have both depression and ADHD. When my ADHD was *finally* diagnosed — in my 50s — I said, “Of course I’m depressed, I’ve had undiagnosed ADHD my whole life!” The diagnosing psychologist totally got it.

I remember telling my psychologist that I had signs of depression since childhood because of that and she sent me to get evaluated for ADHD, turned out she was right.

I was treated like a depressed since 19yo, and only get the right diag last year, at 38, and it really changes everything (starting the right treatment). And I must say it should be a crime to treat an adhd patient with SSRIs, because it makes us “accept” the continuous frustrations that adhd brings us, making us accept this situation. This is very sad.

Doctors are real hit or miss. The first psychiatrist I saw a while ago unfortunately took one look at my having depression as a teen (bullied for my adhd symptoms) and was convinced I didn't have adhd I was just depressed. Wouldn't listen to any of my history and asked real condescending questions like "have you tried to do lists?" RIGHT after the sentence where I described how to do lists never worked for me. She was not listening to a word I said, and eventually I broke down crying in frustration. Luckily I could switch psychiatrists, just waiting on that now

My son was diagnosed with ADHD a few months ago (he also has ASD), my friends husband has ADHD and has been teasing me for a while that I have ADHD.... well at least I thought he was teasing. It was only during my sons assessment that I realised I was struggling with just as many tasks as he was. Now I've started looking up the symptoms I am blown away with how many I have! The dark mood swings are also a thing, I did not know this was a symptom and just assumed I had depression (also have a lot of anxiety).
Thank you! I am learning so much from you! The more I learn the more I can understand and help my son too so this information is invaluable!

And they often come hand in hand and feed off each other which is why talking to a psychologist is so important. Best thing I’ve ever done for myself.

I had a doctor put me on antidepressants that made me dangerously worse. I almost didn’t survive it. Later I find out I have ADHD. The real diagnosis really helped. Now I at least know how to move forward.

I'm 44 and its like the grey cloud has drifted off and the sunset has risen. Looking forward to starting meds to reduce the chatter upstairs can't wait 💝

I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder when I was in my mid-20s. In my late 30s I am as diagnosed with ADHD. Turns out THAT the culprit. Once I turned my attention to my ADHD my anxiety and depression symptoms went way down. Way way down. Knowledge truly is power.

Yes. And, whilst I was diagnosed with depression at 18 and that one did respond to antidepressants, I'm pretty certain now that the later, untreatable "depressive episodes" were burnouts, meltdowns, and shutdowns. And. I'm fairly sure that the original depression was brought on by life events - one of which was starting uni and just not being able to function in the way I had at school. I was diagnosed last week with ASD, and I'm at the beginning of the process for getting assesses for ADHD. Your channels have really helped me understand my brain, and have been part of my "back up and references" in seeking diagnosis. Thank you.

I definitely agree. I have depression (and no ADHD), but follow this channel because I find a lot of the content helps me deal with the executive function loss from my depression.
