She’s not going to listen. She doesn’t want another bucket. I bet you she gets a loan for a brand new car.

but Dave, I'm young and impatient and insecure so math doesn't apply to me.

"Fiercely independent" LOL! All the attitude, none of the action.

I wish Dave would of asked her what exactly happened to her car. If it was an issue where maintenance was involved. There's a lesson to learn from this about maintenance of a car. If you have a Toyota or Honda, for the most part, if you change the fluids, you wont have problems.

-Oil change: every 5000 miles along with the oil filter. Yes, the oil in many cars is still good at 7500miles or even longer however, but all cars burn oil. After 5000 miles my car burns a half a quart. The oil is still fine but the reduced oil volume leads to less lubricated parts which leads to more wear and tear.
-Transmission fluid changes every year... yes, it's overkill but you never have to worry about ever getting full service done at a dealership. My friend has a Honda Accord with a CVT. I taught him how to change it yearly. The total cost of the fluid is $16.00/year for 3 bottles. Dealership recommends a transmission service every 60, 000 miles. CVT's are notorious for building contaminants because of their single belt. He puts 20, 000.00 miles/year on his car. So, he can either go to the dealership and pay $220.00 every 3 years to get the transmissions fluid changed or do it yearly, after years the cost comes out to $48.00. A flush isn't needed because you've continuously changed the fluid yearly.

-Same with radiators. Do it yearly and it's much cheaper than going to the stealership for the service.

I did the minimum changes on my Mitsubishi Eclipse. Car died after 5 years. My Chevrolet Berreta died in 3 years. Then, I owned an Acura for 10 years following the above of maintenance. I drove that car like a mad man racing it to its 8100 r.p.m. red limit. I drove it hard. I owned the car for 10 years with 200, 000 miles without a single problem and I mean nothing. I lost the car in an accident. I was hoping to keep it for another 200, 000 miles. I now own a Honda Accord V6 6-speed manual. I've owned the car for 3 years doing the above. Not a single problem. Do the maintenance on a Toyota, Lexus, Honda, or Acura, for the most part, you will not have problems. Learning to do maintenance is not difficult at all and I'm always happy to teach any of my friends or church members.

All fluids degrade due to oxidation. Not changing fluids is a recipe for costly repairs. It's saved me a tremendous amount of money.

“I have plenty of people who want me to use their vehicle”

There you go problem solved. Stop being “fiercely independent” when you’re “fiercely broke”

$11, 000 in credit card debt? So she’s paying $230 a month in interest... There’s your car repair 🤦‍♂️.

If she gets her income up a bit it sounds like she'll be all set 🤷‍♂️👍

She should find out exactly what is wrong with the car and exactly what it will cost to fix, mechanic who gave her the estimate could be ripping her off.

She has to pay off the old car in order to get the title in order to sell it.

$2500 in repairs, the car might need all that BUT. Might want to ask the shop what does it need now and what can wait. The list might be padded with stuff like brake flush, power steering fluid exchange.

I love when he tells the "Bondo Car" story.

Get 2nd opinion. What repair costs $2500? You can replace engine for that kind of money.

Sometimes the cost of the repair is more than the cost of the car or a new one. I know what I would do!

I just finished dental assisting school and graduated in May. My car ended up messing up on and It's going to cost $1300 to fix. The price isn't so much my worry its the horrific timing! I feel like I can't even apply for a dental assistant job because I don't have a dependable vehicle or get anywhere unless it is during the weekend. The only thing I can think of is try to find a random weekend job where I can borrow a relatives car until I can get enough money to get mine repaired. I guess ill be able to start my career one day smh. Great advice!! Good luck to u all!

What repairs does the car NEED? As in what's needed to keep it running, driving, and stopping safely? There are a lot of little things that can get really expensive if try to fix then all. There are a lot of things that can just stay broken or inoperable.
