My state assemblyman introduced a body armor ban.

I wrote him and asked him if he expected parents to remove those bullet resistant panels from their kids backpacks.

He didn't answer, but the law got gutted.

The only reason to want to ban a defensive item is that the person pushing the ban wishes to use offense against the victim.
