Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways

His "feeling" that he should bring it was undoubtedly divine guidance. 🙏🏼

This verse is part of Surah 9, also known as At-Tawbah (The Repentance). The Surah was revealed during a time of conflict, and many of its verses, including 9:29, are understood in that historical context. The Surah was revealed after the Muslims had faced intense persecution, and it was directed towards those who were actively waging war against the Muslim community.

The verse does not give a blanket command to fight all non-believers, but rather it refers to specific groups who were a threat at that time. The 'jizyah' referred to in this verse is a tax that was historically levied on non-Muslims living under Muslim rule, offering them protection and exempting them from military service.

Many verses of the Quran, including 9:29, were revealed when an event occured. Unlike the Bible and most religious scriptures, the Quran does not record the circumstances that leads to a verse being revealed. The people at the time of the revelation would know what the revelation means (because they were facing the circumstances that led to the verse being revealed), but later people would have to refer to hadith and history to understand what went on at that time.

Prior to this verse being revealed, the Prophet had sent an emissary, Al-Harith ibn Umair Al-Azdi on an errand to carry a letter to the ruler of Busra. On his way, he was intercepted by Sharhabeel ibn Amr Al-Ghassani, the governor of Al-Balqa and a close ally to Caesar, the Byzantine Emperor. Al-Harith was tied and beheaded by Al-Ghassani.

Following this, the Muslims sent an army of 3, 000 to Balqa to seek revenge. However, they were badly outnumbered and eventually had to withdraw. This was the battle of Mu’tah.

The Romans then decided to take the battle to Madinah and began to gather a huge army of the Byzantines and pro-Roman Ghassanite tribes to launch a decisive bloody battle against the Muslims

It was at this point that verse 9:29 was revealed, to order the Muslims to prepare for battle. Consequently, the Muslims gathered an army of about 40, 000 men and waited for the Romans in Tabuk.

When the Romans heard of the numerical strength of the Muslim army, they changed their mind about attacking the Muslims.

Verse 9:29 is not a general order to fight against Christians. It was a specific order to defend against the Romans.

Verse 9:29 must be read together with other verses of the Quran, such as the following:

Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Verily, Allah does not love transgressors. (2:190)

Fight them until there is no more persecution and worship is for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors. (2:193)

If the enemy inclines to peace, then incline to it also and rely upon Allah. Verily, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing. (8:61)

So if they remove themselves from you and do not fight you and offer you peace, then Allah has not made for you a cause for fighting against them. (4:90)

A key word used in 9:29 is "qatilu" (fight). This word is different from the word 'iqtulu' (kill). The word "qatilu" means to oppose and strive against No where does it say slaughter them, as shown in the text at the end. So she was right.

Im an American Christian based woman. My mother got with a muslim man when i was 8 years old.. That man deflowered me at 9 and continued till i was 16. I learned to speak Farsi, pashto and Arabic. Learned to read and write in arabic, by time i was 12. I respected their religion and ways even though i knew it wasnt my religion. I learned their ways and had to practice them if i wanted to be close to considered "family" (i never was). No matter how much i did everything right *by their book!* Theyd still call me a white american dog in farsi and i made sure they never knew how well versed i became in their language. I saw their fake smiles and broken english compliments. From family and their extended family & friends. I had 12 children assault me with lemons because i was a white American married into the family. Below trash. Until i cried in pashto "why are you hurting me we're suppose to be family" & they stopped. Kids are more bilingual than adults, they knew what i was saying in english but continued to hurt me. Until i spoke in *their* tongue, they took consideration. We were all 13. Hatred *is* bred, but let me tell you from my own eye, it is bred very early in islam.
But not as infants. When my cousins were born they *loved* me so much they'd cry when id give them back to mom or dad after babysitting for 12 hours and i have to go to school in 4. But when they turned 5 (and communicated with me in farsi and english since they were 3) went to Iran for 8 months.. The boy came back so rude and entitled, barely regarding me as if he was told how to view people like my color even though i gave him so much love and attention the first 4 years of his life. The girl who was so bubbly, giggly and happy, returned as a quiet, shut off little 5 yo girl. She stopped talking, stopped playing with her brother, and only stuck around her dad. She went to iran with just her mother. I know a problem was a man there and she only felt safe around her dad, not her mother because clearly, she didnt protect her daughter.
It is absolutely taught and bred, theyre not born evil but truly they are indoctrinated into the viewpoint of hatred of anyone non muslim. I cant even say its a religion but a massive cult.

My Muslim friends in college admitted to me that they they say all of their prayers in Arabic even though they cannot read or speak Arabic, and that they trust what it says even though they don’t actually understand it at all. It’s like if I read the Bible and prayed in Spanish solely without ever understanding. It’s kinda mind blowing.

How nice of them take it out of context.

It's long.
This Aya was initially revealed to the relation to the expedition to Tabuk, to face the Byzantine(Romans) army.

•What is the Tabuk expedition?
According to Sahib Muslim or hadith and Ryad us-Saliheen, the Tabuk expedition was undertaken as a result of the imminent advancement of the Byantine(Romans) army on the Syrian border of the war.

•When the Muslims got to Tabuk, to face the enemy, the Muslims found that the Bysantine had fled, so what did the muslims do to those christians and jews that sided against the Muslims?
-nothing. No harm was inflicted
(Check Sahih albukhari vol.4 Book 53 hadith 387 if you want)

Since all wars must end. A limit and end of the action of fighting against those people has also been set in this verse:
"Until they pay jizyah with their own hands while they are humble"
Literally, Jizyah means to return or recompense
It refers to the amount of money taken from disbelievers in lieu of killing.
They were given a choice. That's mercy.
The have to adhere to the states rules and they will be protected and they will not be hindered when practicing their religious duties.

Keep in mind, Women, children, elders, religious leaders the disabled and handicapped do not need to pay Jizyah.

Had Jizyah been taken in lieu of Islam, it should have been taken from the previously mentioned individuals as well.

Once the Jizyah is paid, ALL fighting must be stopped, if a muslim harasses a none muslim thats under protection, the prophet himself will side with them in the day of judgement.

Why did the expedition happen (since someone was trying to twist the reason in the replies):

The Bysantine army demonstrated an unjustifiable opposition towards the Muslims. They killed the ambassador of Allah’s Messenger (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Al-Harith bin `Umair Al-Azdi (May Allah be Pleased with him). Not to mention The Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) heard rumors of a Byzantine invasion for control of the northern part of the caravan route from Mecca to Syria.
There's more to it, but you can do your own research if you're interested.
