So you have a new puppy or dog and you want to take him or her on a walk. You attach the leash and discover that your dog is far more interested in biting and plying with the leash than taking walk! What do you do? I'll show you in this video!

Quote from Zak (at 3:04): Let the emphasis of all your training be on “YES” not “NO”

My dog is an idiot. And I'm a bigger idiot because I have never train a dog before. So he got the treats all the time. Now he's fat, and I still can't walk him.

We have a 6 month old German Shepard/Border Collie mix. We’ve had her for about 4 months and she’s done amazing on walks with her leash! Just last week she started to bite the leash and become a little aggressive (trying to bite my hand to release the leash) when we are about a block away from the house. It’s been happening everyday since. I’m going to try these tips, thank you for this video!

This was getting so frustrating I was about ready to just give in and go with it. You are a LIFE SAVER!!

My 8 month old Great Pyr, Lucy, only does this when she thinks that I am keeping her away from others that she wants to pet her. She's like, "Hey! that person over there wants to love on me and you're not letting them!"

Zak....great video....best hint I picked up from this is that when my puppy gets into "training mode" it's not a failure.  My 5 month old GSD is great when he knows we're gonna do our lessons.  It's a whole different ballgame from ordinary life.  He gets into mode and is a great student, but I've always viewed this as a failure because I think he will only behave during "lessons".  Your video made me realize this preparatory attitude can be used at other times, and that it's a good thing.

I'm dealing with this right now. My puppy is 3 months old and walking is a huge challenge because he thinks his leash is a tug of war rope. I will try this!

I am dealing with this very issue right now. Bella was great during our first walks without distractions but now that school has started and our town is busier, she is more distracted and does tug of war out of nowhere quite aggressively. I will definitely bring little treats with me as she understands basic commands and sits pretty for me. She is almost 3 months old so will really want to correct this behavior quickly as she is a wonderful dog apart from this minor issue.

Zak I just want to say thank you for everything you do! You have been an amazing help in me and my puppy's life! I have a 11 week Golden retriever her name is Harper Jane she's been with me since 8 weeks... We watch tons of your videos multiple times lol..to the point my pup recognizes your voice lol.... It's funny it's like she knows it's "school time" when I put you on our T.V...she comes and sits patiently most of the time I have plenty of experience with taking care of dogs but zero experience of training.... Being a golden I read that they are basically super easy to train and with your help it's been a breeze! I got her so I could train her to be a service dog and hopefully with your help I won't have to spend mega bucks on training...she's draining my pockets already with toys / home saftey/ pet insurance/ food and treats lol....we are thinking about PetSmart school but I feel as if it would be Waist of money knowing you are just a click away for free and super great at what you do! Well anyways thanks again and look forward to watching more of your videos!
Luv- Ash n Harper Jane

Have a new rescue (Blue Heeler/Lab mix) 11 week old for a week and appears I should first focus on sit, stay and look at me before I embark on leash training. Great tips to deal with leash biting!

I appreciate the info that you share. My big problem with my five-month-old female boxer is this leash biting. I’m gonna try your method now. I have been working the basic commands with much success but this behavior is one that’s been the toughest to break.

Thank you Zak. George not only has this issue but he sits down or lies down mid walk. It's like he's just had enough and isn't going to cooperate. He's a border collie pup only 4mths old. We don't go too far on our walks as its a slow process and I run out of treats.
Love your videos. Thanks
Sarah

I'm working with a e month old golden right now. He chews and tugs on the leash, and I'm teaching him to leave it. However, he gets really worked up and even grabs my hands and tugs. He's even gotten to the point of growling and snapping at me when I tell him to leave it.
