when my puppy is nipping i will make my hand into biting position then touch my dogs neck and make a growling sound..then my puppy will stop and will look at me in a weird/confusing way, then my puppy will move away to find diferrent thing/s to bite.

Wow. We were really having trouble with our 8 week old puppy and biting. We had resigned ourselves to this being part of teething, which it is, but the trick in this video of yelping like a hurt pup when she bit too hard really worked. We've seen about an 80% reduction in the really hard biting that was so annoying. Thanks for the video Cesar and Todd!

You see the problem I have with the “Be a tree” is that my puppy bites hard and her teeth are like needles… I’ll sweat by the time she’s done with my foot. Then when I’m done doing the tree she’s back at it. So really the only choice at the moment is run away

I read in the book The Art Of Raising A Puppy (monks in NY state who raise German Shepherds) gave two really good suggestions that I find to work well. They said to put your finger down the puppies throat to gently initiate their gag reflex which would associate an unpleasant experience with the finger. Also you can rub lemon juice on your fingers. We have done both successfully for nipping! Good luck out there!

That approach is to simplistic for a high energy puppy. Mine gets angry and aggressive if I try to act like a tree. I’ve tried the food redirect and he will sit/lay down/ and wait then he’s right back at it. There’s got to be another way.

I dont understand the redirection technique. Would it actually reinforce the behavior because we give treats after they bite?

I just got a pug and I’ve tried yelping, stepping away, being the tree, sour apple, redirecting him with a treat and a toy and nothing works. Someone please let me know anything else that helped 😩 When I do all of these, he just starts growling barking and clings on to our skin or clothing harder that we have to give him a time out.

I was thinking of redirecting my life decisions and was stumped. Now I know it's the bacon that will help me do this. Thank you.

Andre's voice sounds exactly like Cesar. I wasn't looking at the video and thought why Cesar sounded younger

Wouldn't giving the puppy food reward the nipping behaviour?

Yess! I love this! I work at a shelter and people ask these questions all the time. I love learning new techniques! :)

Surely you shouldn’t reward your puppy for biting, which is what your doing if you’re giving it a treat every time it does!
