The best way to balance saving and enjoyment is to have a fun/entertainment category and be reasonable with how much to allocate to it. Cover all the other categories and then the rest goes towards fun stuff. You gotta have balance, can't be reckless with your spending and you shouldn't try to be a miser and save every penny either.

I took my kid to the zoo today. We rode a horse. Bought popcorn. Went down slides. All of that cost money. A lot of great memories come from spending money.

Why can't you budget for interesting things? The budget is not about restricting things, it is about knowing where the money goes. Most people do not know where it goes, it all just goes. A budget allows you to know where it goes and make a decision as to whether you need or want that money to go to a certain place. A budget is about eliminating waste, not restricting wants.

You get to enjoy life MORE when you're on a budget! You have your responsibilities handled, your emergency fund fully funded, and your retirement on track. What's left for fun money is specifically for fun, you're not shorting your other responsibilities and feeling guilty over it just to have some enjoyment. You can enjoy much more purely, when you're on a budget.

Finding that like minded person & do things that don't cost much is a great thing. I joined an older single lady camping group. We stay local & enjoy each other's company.

Back when I still had a student loan balance I went to Las Vegas....twice. Had an awesome time both trips. Since paying them off, I haven't been back. That was 2003.

That's nothing against Vegas, any other tourist trap or vacationing in general, but we westerners are often blessed to live in a culture of abundance. Contrary to what our FOMO consumer culture teaches, a lot of it can be enjoyed without spending gobs of money.

I'm middle aged. I get a kick out of several different money shows on youtube. Themes and goals are necessary, but for me, tracking every dollar is miserable. If you hate tracking every dollar, then find a good system that doesn't require it. I've observed if you're responsible back to your opportunity and income- and treat debt like the plague- you can pretty much apply any reasonable system you want and succeed at about the same level.

They have meet up groups where you can go hiking, biking, beach etc. with people who are interested in the same hobbies.

This is mad. I find being on a budget and in good standing with my finances enjoyable. I have less anxiety and worry. I can enjoy the process, especially when I do things and spend money cause I know it’s planned for and it’s not putting me in a bad position. This guy seems pretty materialistic so possibly he just needs to increase his “fun/personal spending” budget line item and still work on his financial goals in the background. There’s nothing wrong with that. But sticking to a budget is important and enjoying the process is arguing even more important. It’s gotta be a lifestyle so you’re able to stick to it 💕
