If You Detonated a Nuclear Bomb In The Marianas Trench (Just Fantasy, not science!)

I hope everyone understood where science ends and fantasy begins?)

Thank's Armando Sepulveda, Fernando Arroyo, CGSOS LLC & Twize films for "The Big Wave" project (04:03 - 04:08) in this video.

What would happen if a nuke went off in the Mariana Trench? This is the Tsar Bomba the nuke that Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev promised to show the West during the Cold War 58.6 megatons of sheer unadulterated power with a subsequent blast wave that circled the globe three times. And this
is the Mariana Trench the deepest crack in the Earth's. Surface a canyon almost seven miles or 11 kilometers deep up to three miles or five kilometers wide and completely filled with water.

Me: Mom, can we get Kurzgesagt?
Mom: Honey, we have Kurzgesagt at home. Kurzgesagt at home:

That kind of bomb could have little impact on Earth.
Change of orbit, tear apart the planet, are you high?

"Just Fantasy, Not Science"

Kurzgesagt just made a video about what would actually happen, highly recommend that channel over this one

Kurzgesagt made a science version of your video lol

That title change isn't gonna save this video from a dislike.

I'm going to give this video a thumbs up. Just fantasy, not an actual like.

This guy just broke my bullshit meter.

It’s impressive how this became “fantasy” in an instant

Geologist here, was about to rip this video a new one for having no factual basis, but glad the comment section has done that for me - actually makes me hopeful a lot of people don't fall for this bs

PSA this wasn't the original title. It didn't have "fantasy not science." Not that it matters but this tripe puts all your videos in a skeptical eye....

this video is so absurd i was actually waiting for the guy to say "i'm kidding" at the end.

Ya, um...no. Surprised they didn't mention Godzilla as a likely side effect.

Wow Cody and Kurzgesagt completely pulled this video apart. What a "science" video this is.

Cool video idea but it's super exaggerated.

Probably the worst bit was the change in the Earth's orbit which is physically impossible according to Newton's laws, unless unbelievable amounts of mass were ejected into space (which didn't happen even when the Tsar Bomba was detonated on the surface). But here's the rest...

The Tsar bomba is 50 million tonnes TNT yield. The earthquake which caused the 2004 Boxing day tsunami (9.1-9.3) was an order of magnitude more powerful (for example you could expect a 9.0 and a 10.0 magnitude earthquake to release a 500 Million and 15 Billion TNT equivalent worth of energy respectively). The wave height for the 2004 tsunami was about 30m or 100ft at its maximum, not quite 400ft.

The effects of a deap sea explosion are minimal due water being incompressible, meaning it absorbs amounts of energy when displaced. Additionally the deep trench the explosion would be located in would likely absorb most of the shockwave energy, probably resulting in storm level waves, hardly "washing away South-East Asia".

The Earths crust weighs (very roughly) 250, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000kg, suggesting a relatively small energy release would cause the convergence or divergence of two continental plates is fairly (extremely) bold claim.

Finally suggesting that will result in a chain reaction causing 12.0 Earthquakes is a bit off a piss-take. That's a 15 Trillion tonne TNT energy release per earthquake, about 300, 000 times more powerful than your inital explosion per Earthquake. And apparently that will carry on for a month. From a single explosion.

Finally, punching the whole in the crust and causing a magma fountain?! Blowing through a few kilometres of crust is not going to happen anytime soon, sorry.

Voice: "the water will reach 110 MegaPascal"
Video maker: That sounds small, lets add 6 zero's to that. 110 000 000 MPa. There.
