Natural buildings don’t melt, no matter how rainy it gets

His basic response: it’s not all that different from building with wood. “Basically you need to put a roof over any earthen structure, just as you would a wooden structure. The problems show up a lot more quickly with earthen structures than with wooden structures, but it’s all the same forces acting on both of them. You don’t want to build a wooden house with no roof or it’s going to rot.”

In this video, he talks about how long-lasting earth structures can be as long as they have a roof, a foundation (to protect from ground moisture), and possibly a protective plaster (“if you live in a place with wind-driven rain that comes in horizontally”).

This man has some of the most aesthetic work I have seen with these materials...

@BOJOPAWS I just shot the video, but Michael is one of the authors of "The Hand-Sculpted House" as well as "The Cobber's Companion". I think he's a great interview as well. He really explains the topics well.

My dream is to build a cob home...such good energy in the structure but I know that it's a ton of work.

There is actually no plaster that's better in wet conditions than hot lime mortar plaster. We have castles in Europe which have been made with hot lime mortar at a time before Columbus was borne. But hot lime generates a lot of grey energy cost. If you are satisfied with 100 to 200 years of durability and your not living in often flooded areas then clay plaster is the better and cheaper choice.

They dont melt but the rain definitely washes them away.

@TheDenisedrake Funny, I too have been thinking about the Three Little Pigs during this edit process of these natural building videos. Straw and sticks might have worked for them if they'd had time to make cob or straw bale.

Yeah!!! The video I've been waiting for-- it did not disappoint. It does seem that cob would melt in rain. Thank you for another interesting video. Apparently the story of The Three Little Pigs has some serious architectural engineering flaws. :P

How often do you need to re-plaster the outside of the homes made of cobb to keep them water safe? I understand that a good roof and over-hang are needed as well as a good foundation when you live in wet climate areas with a lot of wind and rain. Oregon I believe (or was told) is a lot like England and that is where they have many cobb houses. I really love the flexibility of building with the cobb because of the soft rounded corners and surfaces and also the safer environment as far as toxins go.

I used to be attracted to men who had Lamborghinis, Ferraris and mansions and now I’m attracted to men like Michael Smith who build cob houses. I enjoy watching all your videos on him and his work. What he does is incredible. Thank you for sharing. I love your videos!!

Hmmm.... I live in Texas, and pretty much all of our rain is wind driven rain. I'm thinking about doing some cob building ... guess that means I'll need some form of lime plaster.

it is very hard to understand you some of the time. perhaps someone could caption this and try to at least cover those sections, or include a script to what was said? I am very interested in this subject and do not really want to miss any details.

Sounds like he has that disorder that effects the diaphragm ... I know that the other active ingredient in marijuana (not thc but the other one) gets rid of this disorder for some greater time more than other medications

can the walls be plastered with concrete on the outside then plastered? Wouldn't that solve any weather issues from outside?

@jester9 Michael was sick with a bad cold when this video was made. That should be obvious.
