Wonderkid Development Guide

How do you get that high potential wonderkid to reach their potential? It is the number one question that dictates every Football Manager save I do. I talk so much about how to sign those amazing wonderkids in the first place, but for years I have not taken the DEEP dive into wonderkid development on Football Manager. It is a good thing we have our heroic training team to lead the way.

A lot of this stuff I had never even thought about before we started working on this FM training series. The idea of specifically tailored training sessions with your youth teams was completely foreign to me, but it all suddenly made sense. There are piles and piles of good training tips in this video along the way, plus ready-made training schedules for your wonderkids to get absolutely everything out of them and get you to the Champions League title faster than ever on Football Manager.

Much Love,
FM Senpai

BE SURE YOUR WONDERKIDS ARE IN THE RIGHT UNIT FOR YOUR SPECIFIC TRAINING. IT WOULD BE A SHAME IF THE AMAZING WINGBACK THAT YOU WANTED TO TRAIN OFFENSIVELY WAS IN THE DEFENSIVE UNIT FOR TRAINING.

I swear zealand can read minds. All I've been thinking about in my mom's basement for 6 weeks is how to develop my Zimbabwean wonder kids. Thank you zealand

Used your training for the senior team & went from just clinching playoffs in EFL 1 to top of the league & secured playoffs with about 8 games left. Currently about 10 points clear so hopefully will win the league.

Here's a quick little tip. If you let someone else take control of youth individual training at the start of a save, generally they will set a position and role training. You can then take control over, and change the ones you don't like and only have to set it for new players.

You can add youth players to senior squad units. After doing this if you allow the assistant to assign the mentoring groups it will include the players brought into senior squad training. You cannot go in and pick them manually but once the mentoring groups are created you can add/remove the senior players you want to mentor the youngsters

Gonna say this:FM does a terrible job of recognizing that your B Team is actually playing competitive matches that matter. In either Spain or Germany, I can have a B Team in a playable league, and players and coaches both will scream to move players on loan from the playable team, where they're getting regular minutes in a system that matches your own, to a team of equivalent or lower quality, with worse facilities, in a system that doesn't match yours.

No way, IRL, would I be loaning my players in competitive football out to competition in that circumstance. The game needs to recognize when a loan experience is actually better for the player. And it doesn't do that.

The "staff offer to clubs" section was completely new to me. Insane. You're the man!

I started praising players for training more regularly and it has made a massive difference. I normally only did it when I wanted to boost morale before key matches but do it is as often as possible now. The sexiest of arrows

I love the obscure elements! That makes it more human, as the staff can fail in their judgement.. but actually if you’re experienced enough yourself, you know an approx level of its potential or whether the players ability is enough compared to your level.

For restrictions on loaning players out it's generally enforced on over 22's which is really not a problem you have when developing actual Wonderkids. Also the Loan Options at 6:30 never really tend to work or be enforced by your staff when offering multiple people out at a time, for my saves they may as well not be there and I heavily farm wonderkids - loaning is a massive part of that and the only way to ensure the players are offered to the correct Nation etc is do it manually 1 by 1.

On a side note, I haven't updated the Z Skin since it was launched. I finally just did, and the gap is THICC. The skin is so awesome my man, keep up the good work.

It's great that when you spend a certain time at the club and develop a certain style of play, bring certain type of players to the club and have been training the players certain ways through the years, then at some point you practically don't need to set the "develop trait" setting in the individual training for younger players any more, they mostly pick it up through mentoring, which also allows them to progress more as you can then give them some other individual training (for specific attributes)

One piece of big brain advice for looking for coaches is just to search HOYDs and offer them coaching roles because they’re always so well rounded and have high working with youngsters rating

Haven’t played fm in years but in the past I would do max training on mentality stats and even on the others just enough so that training isn’t considered heavy. Mental training didn’t use much energy and had great benefits

My first training session after a matchday is always "Match Practice", followed by Recovery & Match Review. Players from the matchday get a 1 day No Pitch or Gym Work. Keeps everyone sharp & no lost day.

With the loans, I always check the media prediction for the club as well if the club is in an active league. Player ratings are much better in a top of the table team than a relegation team. Had some loanee goalkeepers get great ratings in relegation teams mind. Be interesting to know though if a player was on the cusp of playing in the championship, whether they'd gain more from the higher rep of a championship bottom 6 team or the higher ratings of a top 6 league 1 team.
