After putting down my guitar almost thirty years ago, I’ve finally set myself the challenge to pick it back up. I turn sixty next year and my goal is to break through the confidence barrier to be able to play a few songs for family and friends and work on from there. One of my sons taught himself to play over the past few years simply using YouTube and practising constantly. He’s absolutely incredible and he’s given me the motivation to believe I can do this. Perhaps not to the level he’s at but it’s definitely possible. So here goes …… 🤞🏼🤞🏼😊

Also... looking back, I think that the most beneficial thing that I did early on was trying to learn barre chords almost from the beginning, even though I couldn't really use them until a lot later. It feels completely impossible at first, and sounds terrible for a while after that - but once the combination of skill development and muscle development works its magic, a whole world opens up.

As an older guy just about to embark on my third go around of playing guitar, with many years of not playing in between, I can not emphasize this enough: HAVE FUN. All your tips are spot on, gotta say, as with any hobby, it’s easy to get burned out. You don’t have to completely step away like I made the mistake of doing. Change it up, play the songs you know in a different style than you’ve familiarized yourself with. Play “Your Body Is A Wonderland” like a reggae song, or whatever. Change it up, keep it fun. No amount of money spent on guitars or effects pedals is going to make you a better player, just enjoy what you’re doing and you won’t be able to get enough of it.

I used to study guitar back when I was a teen and then put it down for some odd years until recently. Your videos and tips have been amazing and extremely helpful. Thank you for helping me feel motivated to play again <3

Thanks for this video , your advice on learning chords quicker through hearing your favorite songs is amazing because you learn the chord and work on transitioning . I’ve been just practice chords individually which is okay but already eager to piece stuff together .

Thank you for this ❤️ I have played the guitar before but not well: I always get to a certain spot and then give up: my goal for 2023 is to use your videos to learn a song every week or two and grow my skills ❤

HI Nena thanks so much for your guitar lesson. I've learn a lot from you, your ideas are more practical, realistic and sensible. You have open my mind and give confident and better direction to finally learn to play guitar. A lot of kudos to you, I hope that more people can watch your videos.

i started with ukulele and that really helped me get a feel for chord changes, how your hands should be positioned, progressions, etc. obviously not the same instrument but having the foundational muscle memory makes everything a lot easier.

omggg the applying pressure to the strings with your thumb from the back.. that's so helpful! idk why i didn't think about it but it helped get my d chord and a chords sounding better! and if you are seeing all my recent comments on your old guitar vids then i thought i should update you, the guitar i've been learning on was my moms from 30 years ago and it has a belly bubble or something like that and i went to a music shop to beg new sting bc they were so old and rusty (and heavy/ hard to press) and i ended up getting a new guitar! i'm got a cheap fender! i'm so excited, this guitar is so much more comfortable! the old one was a really bulky bently and this one is a lot smaller and easier to manage! this alone is gonna motivate me more too☺️

For people struggling with bar chords, electric guitar fixed my problem. Just learning bar chords on the electric guitar has made it so much easier on acoustic. I am still not perfect but I can get 6 clear sounding strings which is a massive jump. Bar chords are easier on electric guitar purely because you don't need to apply so much pressure to the frets because of the pick ups and also because of the smaller neck so I really do recommend trying this if you have access to an electric guitar. Also, electric guitars are SUPER FUN!

Agree completely! Get a Fender or Yamaha for a hundred bucks or so. Make a list of songs you can play and a wish list of songs you’re working on. Play something every day. Some fun ones and push yourself a bit. In no time your set list will grow and so will your confidence.
