The most common causes of ear inflammation are impacted earwax, recurring infections of the middle ear (chronic otitis media), and otitis externa (swimmer’s ear).
00:25 - Symptoms of ear inflammation.
The usual symptoms of ear inflammation are ear pain, discharge from the ear, decreased hearing and a blocked ear, and a ringing/buzzing sound in the ear. The doctors probe inside the ear using an otoscope and look for the causes. If there is any earwax then it is removed and if there is any infection causing pus, a sample is taken and sent to the lab.

Treatment of ear inflammation has varying types. If the inflammation is due to impacted wax over-the-counter tablets can help. In case of impacted wax, wax softeners are prescribed by the doctor and it is advised to use the softeners for 7-8 days. After that one should visit the doctor again and get the wax removed. An ear infection is treated by antibiotics, over-the-counter tablets, and ear drops. It is very important to avoid getting water inside the ear and not to use earbuds.

Some home remedies for ear inflammation include applying cold or warm press on the ear, using over-the-counter painkillers, and chewing gum on the side which is affected. One should avoid using non-prescribed medicines and ear drops.
