This is true, but to clear up some info (I have stretched ears, beyond one inch in size).

You have to wait months - not weeks - in between each stretch. Average time is around 6 months, but everyone's lobes are different. More time is better than less and greatly reduces the chance of blowout.

Blowout is what he's referring to - the earlobe becoming inflamed, swelling, and possibly tearing. It looks swollen and 'flipped inside-out', hence the name.

When you stretch your lobes, you are moving up in very very small increments - millimeters and centimeters. You start with a regular piercing needle size (14g-16g), and move slowly up in centimeters (16 to 14, 14 to 12, 12 to 10). The smaller the number, the bigger the size. Each stretch is done using clean materials, and sanitizing the ear as well as using jojoba oil or a balm is important to maintain health.

You do not want to stretch with tapers (pointed piercings with gradual incline), and acrylic, plastic, wood, silicone, or resin materials. The material used can impact your healing. Tapers both can stretch your ear-skin too fast, and make it harder to tell when to stop. You should, ideally, only use single-flair glass plugs to stretch. The back is rounded at the end, and evenly sized through the whole plug. It should not hurt At All to move up to the next size, and if it does, STOP and WAIT.

Even if you do not experience blowout, you can risk creating permanently damaging scar tissue that would prevent proper healing and make it difficult to continue stretching or even shrinking your lobes. Once you reach a certain size, it should be noted you will never get back to 'normal' piercing holes and will have to seek surgical repair for 'regular' earlobes.

My source is that I have been stretching my ears for over nine (9) years. I am actively heading to two (2) inches, and my goal is to be able to fit a can through my earlobe. I care deeply about stretching, finding it to be a spiritual experience for me connecting me to my ancestors, who stretched their earlobes. I have made many mistakes in my earlier days, and never want any new stretchers to make the same ones I did!
