Athena Strand: What is a 'familiar stranger'? | KVUE

We've all experienced the sense of being familiar with someone we don't really know. These so-called "familiar stranger" are people we see every day.

A BUTANE MAN was the familiar stranger in my neighborhood, bringing candy to the kids, promising me to take me to see his horses. On my birthday he came in and asked my mom if he could take me to see them-she said yes-she too knew who he was. The rest is history. I was 11 years old.

The sad thing is kids see adults respecting and trusting these familiar strangers in uniforms etc..and so kids is conditioned to think the person is safe, like the mailman, pastor, store clerk, bus driver etc...its sad.
