How to develop feel in your SHORT GAME!!

I remember when I was learning golf, I used to get in a panic about club selection around the green. I didn't know which wedge or club to pick. then one day, I realized...I could play the shot with any club! So long as I had skill in my feel and touch.

This is a drill that I use to work on this aspect of the game. I hope it helps you too.

I’ve been watching a lot of Daniel Grieve content ever since he did the video with Rick Shiels. Would love to see a video with the two of you being reacquainted. 👍🏻

A well spoken and intelligent golfer plus a voice that’s easy to listen to. Thanks for this content; my short game is simply terrible.

I am loving this new series. Teaching golfers how to practice is such an overlooked aspect of golf instruction in my opinion. I will be following along and can't wait for the next video to come out!

I just did this drill today at the range (having watched the video last week) and it was awesome. I took so much away from it, including but not limited to improved feel and understanding of the different clubs and a better use of my time at the range than ever before. Thanks Iona!!

Good tip to mix it up! When I'm practicing I generally hit three of the same shots with the same club, and invariably the first one is the best. After that I seem to think about how I should change the first shot instead of just focusing on playing the shot at hand.

Iona, great drill to get your hands feeling right, or ready! I used to have a very old bladed 7 iron for all these shots, think it was a swilken, could never miss and knew it!

Really good drill, will try this next time I'm practicing. These short videos with tips for practice drills are priceless, you explain not just the technicalities but the attitude to the stroke and the game in a way that makes me rethink how I approach the game and how I practice. And of course it's presented by the absolutely nicest person on YouTube 🙂.

Quality content this one - I've never seen this drill before, and it's clear how it moves you out of the zone of mindless repetitive drilling, and forces you to think and adapt, and "fashion" shots.

Taking golf away from science for a moment, and more towards art. Liking it. liking it a lot!

Great video again Iona, thank you. In the olden days, teachers like Greg Norman and David Leadbetter suggested that when chipping, a desired outcome was to "get the ball rolling on the green as soon as possible", so they recommended choosing a club (down to even a 3 iron), with a trajectory that would just fly the fringe and get flat and rolling as soon as possible. The goal was to choose the loft needed to carry the grass and fringe before the green, then get the ball rolling like a putt. This would translate to using lower lofted clubs like 3 iron, 5 iron etc (softly), if there was only a short distance of fringe grass to carry before the green, up to a higher lofted club if there was further to carry to reach the green. Therefore chipping was done with multiple clubs. I can see an advantage with this due to being able to read the ball movement on a green easier if it is rolling like a putt, (as well as your target point is closer to you), but I can also see the advantage of getting lots of experience using only one or 2 clubs for pitching too. This video introduces 4 clubs for pitching (which i know youre not suggesting as "the answer to everyones pitching problems"), but it does make me lean towards the "use more clubs for different results" method. Do you tend to favour one or 2 clubs for pitching yourself, or do you still consider even lower lofted clubs to facilitate a lower trajectory and controlling the roll-out like a putt? Hope that makes sense. :)
