Personally, I think the first few suits should be off the rack. Keeps the cost low, but you can try a few different brands and styles and see which type of cut fits you best for trousers, which width of lapel looks the best etc.

Once you know your style and you're sure of it, you can go custom to avoid picking the wrong suit at a higher price (not every tailor will do his best to help you out, some will do exactly what you say, without giving you advice even if they know it may not be the best option)

Also, great short story about the wedding and I sure hope it was before your YouTube days. I could just imagine the looks on faces of people if a style expert with his own YouTube channel showed up in an ill fitting suit!

My one and only bespoke suit is a greenish brown two button with a blue liner and two pairs of pants I got in Thailand from a little shop near the hotel we were at for a conference. My wife also got a dress their for formal weddings and dinners - I am an acedemic so every conference has a dinner.

It was a great investment.

One thing left out when you go bespoke is the story and the process. You feel great picking out the fabrics and designs with the taylor. Then when people complement you on it, you want to tell the story of going to this far off place and having it made.

Buying something off the rack would be okay if you're general body type, because that's what they are based on, though you would be compromising on essential details like cuffs, lapels etc. All being done, you're still on the brand's mercy when it comes to fabric.

For this guy, I would recommend getting an off the rack suit that fits well across the chest and on the shoulders and then gets it altered. He's not going to have a lot of opportunities to wear it in the military and he may still be growing. When he gets into his later 20s and if he leaves the military, then go custom. He will be able to wear it more and his body will have stopped growing and he will probably have more disposable income at 28 then 22.
