If the community is toxic, you should build your own community. with préférence and courtesans! :)

I left the hobby in 2010 when Warhammer Fantasy was killed off. I still had models for my Wood elf army on their way from the UK when the I saw the announcement. I felt angry & betrayed having spent so much time & money on Warhammer when I was still a student & often opted out of other activities just so that I can afforded to buy a box for models.

In my community I am the last from my original group. Some moved on to other games, others quit entirely.
Painting feels like a strain as I've got no big goal to achieve like I did when Golden Deamon was in Australia and would have painting challenges with my mates. I play the game maybe once a year when a friend comes up from Victoria to visit.
The new hostile designs make conversions very difficult too.
I've literally no real reason to continue yet I keep buying and expanding my warhammer 40k armies though I don't know why.

If GW keeps making there models almost Impossible to buy then yes I’ll quit but until then

I MUST GET MY COMMANDER FARSIGHT

I would agree with this regarding any hobby.

If the people you surround yourself with are unpleasant, then it's best to move on.

But, I would say it isn't the fault of the hobby. It's the people of that particular group. It's rare that everyone who enjoys a singular hobby is completely toxic.

At the end of the day though, it's best to always take care of one's mental health.

I have mostly painted on my own in my 52 years I tried a group once about ten years ago but they were not friends and one guy was only trying to move into my house as his missus was kicking him out he got his dream job in a games workshop but ended up hating it I back now and my daughter does a little painting with me now and then and despite seeing my models as toys I have a very supportive wife 😊

I got introduced to 40k through the casual “hey bro I actually play” way.

Risky of course, but I made a solid friend. Been ‘round since the foggy days of the past known as 2nd Edition (he thinks its 5th but he mentioned Terminators rolling 2 dice for saves, pure 2nd Edition.)

That’s the way I’ll continue this hobby… alone if I must…

The tried and true “contextually fitting references in hopes that someone’ll understand them” tactic.

40k’s at its best, I think, when you remove any and every concept of competition.

Like… maybe not so far as to not even compete, but… c’mon, dorky figures, dice, three bibles’ worth of lore?? How do you compete when the dice can erase hours of planning in picoseconds??

Enjoy the hobby, “LvUrFR3NZ” and… Idk, chill out in a different space for a while if ya must. Battletech’s in the best place it’s EVER been right now. I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t captured at least 200$ from me already lol

Take care, y’all.

My community is being visited by those who practice for tournaments. I’m not that competitive, and my last game with them really wasn’t any fun. I don’t care about losing, but I do care about the experience and nothing saps the fun quite like a “how do I deal with this” monstrosity combined with “oh, you made a mistake in how the rules interact so sucks to be you”. Man, I’m trying to play this game based on my understanding of it and you’re telling me rules mid game I got wrong when my choices are now nonexistent.

Thanks buddy….

If I can get my casual games back, I’d love it. I still love the painting and the hobby aspect but the “I have a game day” helps motivate the painting

Did this with MTG. tried packing it away, and picked it up again in a new town. New faces, same bs. I gave all my cards to a friend who still plays and I'm done.

My local community with exception of one friend is filled with just unpleasant folks. They treat the hobby as a way to show off how much money they have, being hypercompetitive for no reason (none of them partakes in actual tournaments), they'll conveniently forget to tell you rules of their factions so that they can surprise you with a "gotcha" later, and the great majority of them would be some kind of -ist :(
I turned to more solitary games like Deth Wizards and painting stuff just for myself.

These hosers can get stuffed, I'll keep doing what I love with or without community. 😌

Totally agree, as well as the companies getting too greedy to the point of the hobby not being a feasible outlet because of price.

I don't think I'd say toxic, but it's basically what happened with me. Still not playing, but eventually found my enjoyment of painting for its own sake and my own enjoyment again.

If you no longer have fun with something your doing for fun, stop. Maybe try it again after some time passes to see if things got better, but if you move on don't feel bad for not looking back.

To answer the question. Never. I will never quit painting.

we are meant to have friends?! also i still do models, but ive quit warhammer.. for rather a long time now just due to the fact i dropped my models on a train leading to all of them being damaged.. so i can understand people also quitting for other reasons

When I buy all the miniatures I need to play a 10th edition 2000pt game with all of my siblings.

What if it is I, that is the toxic element in my hobby group?

I quit 40k and most wargaming. I just paint canvas now

As if there aren't other options than that one toxic group.

This is perhaps the most awful advice I've ever heard...if the community turns "toxic" (whatever definition you choose to use for that much maligned word) the correct answer is to quit the community, not the hobby. If you still enjoy painting, playing, collecting etc, don't quit because somebody's a jackass and you don't want to be around them, take it as an opportunity to go take a painting class/enter a different tournament circuit than you traditionally do, and start a new chapter..."quit because they are toxic" you must be joking.
