Today I'll be showing how to test and replace the MAF, or mass air flow sensor, with very basic tools that almost every one of you will already own. Save yourself time and money by following this simple to follow DIY video!

What is a mass air flow sensor, what does the mass air flow sensor do?
The mass air flow sensor is essentially an air meter. The MAF sensor is located between the air filter and the intake manifold of the engine. The mass air flow sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine or the air flow. Based on these real-time inputs, the engine control unit estimates the amount of fuel mass needed to keep air and fuel in balance. Additionally, air density changes with the temperature, pressure, humidity, etc. That is where, again, MAF sensors help.

Trouble codes associated with the MAF sensor:
P0101 - Mass or volume air flow circuit range / performance.
P0102 - Mass or volume air flow circuit low input.
P0103 - Mass or volume air flow circuit high input.
P0172 - System too rich.
P1602 - Control module programming error.
P2096 - Post catalyst fuel trim system too lean.
P2097 - Post catalyst fuel trim system too rich.

What are the symptoms of a bad mass air flow sensor:
- Engine stalls during idling.
- Rough idling or a rough idle.
- Engine does not return to idle.
- Poor acceleration.
- Engine stalls, hesitates or sputters.
- Engine surges or engine surging.
- Spark knock.
- After burning in exhaust system.

Is there a scan tool that tells you which part is bad? Even though if there’s no check engine on?

Depends on brand. AEM is agood brand so is injen brand . Some cars have to be tuned professinally at a tuning shop.
