How do I install a new thermocouple? In this episode of Repair and Replace, Vance shows how to replace the thermocouple in a gas water heater. As well you'll learn how to test the thermocouple voltage to see if its functioning correctly. If the thermocouple is faulty then it will not produce enough voltage and will prevent the pilot from staying lit. Specifically this video focuses on a standing pilot water heater with a conventional gas valve.

I have watched several videos before I landed on this one. Yours by far was the best step by step tutorial I came across, followed it step by step and got my water heater going. Thank you so much for producing this video.

Thanks a lot! Great job! Easy to understand! I replaced thermocouple and it works! Payed less then $11 for the part and saved a lot of money doing it myself. I wouldn't touch this without your help! Thank you!!!!

I have watched many videos. But, this is the best by far. I am a first home owner and I am able to fix my water heater. Thank you for making this video.

I was able to clean the thermocouple with a small cutting of stainless grill scrubber held in a pair of long hemostats. If I were to have to disconnect the gas and pilot lines to clean the thermocouple, for less than $12 at the big box store, I'd just replace it to make sure I got it done correctly it one shot. Thanks for the excellent instructional video! I'm going to order a replacement thermal switch from you (which cannot be purchased locally) to support the creation of these valuable video resources. ☮❤🌈

Appreciate the vid... helpful to know how to measure things. Mine wasn't staying lit so I replaced the thermocouple and the new one maxed out at 20mV. It still would not stay lit.

Grabbed another thermocouple (universal at Lowes) and it is putting out 23-25mV and now working again.

A friend told me the thermocouple was probably my problem - pilot light wont stay lit. thermal limiter switch checks out fine. I found this video. Tested my thermocouple - seems to be fine at 26mv. Reconnected it. And the pilot light stays on now! buaaahahaha! Thanks! :)

I’m a service plumber and thank you for this, I get called to water heater issues all the time, I often don’t know when it’s a failing thermocouple or a failing gas control valve, what is the best way to test to know which one is in fact failing?

Hi, I have a Rheem Water Heater 130L, it has this problem: the pilot stays on, and the main burner only fires up few minutes and then off. If I try again, nothing happens, the main burner does not fire up and the pilot still stays on. Do you have any idea to fix this? Is the problem caused by the thermocouple?
Thank you very much. Your video is the best compared with others on Youtube.
