Oven Temperature Sensor - Testing & Replacement | Repair & Replace

Oven not heating properly? In this episode of Repair & Replace, Vance shows how to test and replace the temperature sensor in an electric oven. The temperature sensor is a heat sensitive resistor, also known as a thermistor. The control board uses the resistance to determine the temperature inside the oven. If the sensor is faulty then the temperature will be off as the oven might overheat or underheat. As well it can prevent the oven from working. This video shows how to test the temperature sensor with a multimeter and how to install a new sensor.

This applies to Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Kenmore, Maytag, General Electric, and Samsung ranges.

The most common resistance for an oven temperature sensor is 1080 ohm but select models can have different sensors with a different resistance range. If you are unsure, look for a tech sheet with the resistance values printed on the side. The tech sheet is sometimes at the back, or behind the front drawer but not all models will have a tech sheet.

1:48 Newer Frigidaire is F10, and sometimes a F11 can be caused. Some Kenmore ranges are built by Frigidaire;

Note: F10/F11/F12/F13:

1. (F10 only) Check *RTD Sensor Probe & replace if necessary. If oven is overheating, disconnect power. If oven continues to overheat when the power is reapplied, replace EOC. Severe overheating may require the entire oven to be replaced should damage be extensive.

2. (F11, 12 & 13) Disconnect power, wait 30 seconds and reapply power.

3. (F11, 12 & 13) If fault returns upon power-up, replace EOC.

Hi, I've checked the temperature sensor and it does show 1080ish at room temperature. I put a heat gun on it and the resistance went up as expected, but then it started to go down?? Very confusing.

Thank you. I had a repair professional look at range due to f9 code and not heating past 150… replaced the “board” but had same problem, taking more than 30 mins to get to 225 degrees. Saw this post and replaced temperature sensor. Working but having issue with temp of oven off by 40 degrees (stove says 350 but thermometer in oven says 310), should I replace something else or adjust the temp on stove? I’m not sure if something is going on. I already paid $ 385 foe service and part. Maybe I should get a new stove? Thank you

Thank you so much for this nice video! But i have an issue with a furnace system where the SV&PV are mismatching during heating process, and at around 100 temp Celsius, heating stop while SV is 640tem Celsius. Is it a sensor issue or Temp Controller?

Hello, good evening, I have a whirlpool oven with the code F3 E0. According to the video it is the temperature sensor but when I check it it gives me a correct resistance around 1080. I don't know what to do. I don't know if it's the sensor or another part. Thanks for the help and I look forward to your response.

Hi first thank you, and do you have anyway to check the resistance temperature detector without multimeter please, my oven its not working but the heaters up and down its ok, but the oven it doesn't get hot whay?

I have a Samsun range with double oven and both ovens are having the same problem. Oven reaches correct temp on the initial preheat but when the door is opened to insert or check the food the temperature doesn’t recover. It only heats to about 345 degrees. Is that a control panel issue.

ok I'm getting a readding of 1080, , , does that mean a bad reading or good enough? Should I order a new sensor?

What are the chances that the temperature sensor is faulty even though my Frigidaire doesn't have an error code. I have tested the sensor, I get a reading of 1085 when tested alone but then no reading when testing the negative lead to the metal? Sound like the sensor? When I try to heat my oven it takes 30 mins to reach a temp of 177° I hear all the clicking and it switches back and forth between the elements.

I have an electric Whirlpool range with a double oven. the top of it is small and the bottom one is normal size. Randomly they will not heat to the set temperature even though the display will say that it has finished preheating. today one of them heated to 400 when it was set for 350 although this is not a common problem with it. Both ovens have this problem of not heating to the set temp, but sometimes they work fine. what part should I test?

I have a Blomberg-appliance (range). The temperature sensor is PT500. This type of sensors are made from platinum and the resistance is 500 ohms at 0 degrees (C). In the video the repair shows a different appliance but the explanation about the thermal sensor seems to me like a general one, for all sensors. In fact it is not - there are different sensors with different resistance.

I'm having trouble getting much service info on my Siemens double wall oven. Purchased in '08-or '09. It's been great until recently. We had an instance or two when it overheated and had to shut off via the breaker switch because the control panel siezed up at the time. after switching the breaker back on it reset itself. Then, however not long after maybe a month or two give or take we started to notice the heat was about 50 degrees less than setting. So we just adjusted accordingly until it just wasn't anywhere near heating. Then we started using the bottom oven more often because it still worked ok. We have removed the heat sensor thermometer probeand tested it. Numbers were flashing irradically, we have ordered the replacement and are yet to install. As of right now we have an error code on screen and are unable to use the bottom oven in the meanwhile. Which we were using until we removed the sensor from the top... It sure would be nice to have more service tech info on the machine. Since it's far from brand new but still in very great shape. I dont consider it old or antiquated. I'd like more than wiring diagrams and would really like to know how to decipher codes and reset/program. 😀👍💪Your video was helpful to me at any rate and I appreciate that very much!

What about a double oven? Is there a sensor in each oven? I have a GE double oven and neither oven is heating.

When I put one probe on each side of the sensor it does read correctly, but when I put one probe to the sensor and the other to the shiny surface of the oven my multimeter just says 1. Does this mean the sensor needs to be replaced?

We have a bad element ( visibly cracked) ordered a new one. Still doesn’t work. Everything else on the appliance works fine along with the broiler. Multimeter checks everything fine. Not sure what else to do.

Hi there, so I tried this and it unfortunately did not fix my issue and I wondered if you could give any further suggestions. My problem is is that my oven takes forever to heat up, and when the preheat sound goes off saying its met the specificed temperature I've found it's not even close. For example, I'll set the oven to 375 degrees and after a bit the preheat sound goes off, but I've placed a gauge inside the oven that tells me the oven hasn't even reached 200 degrees. It'll take another half hour to get to temperature, and that's if I cover the elements on the stove as I've found the oven heat is escaping through the oven vent (that goes into the back right element). If I want to set the oven to 450 degrees it hardly reaches that temperature, and if it does I am waiting way too long. I've tested the temperature probe inside the oven and it reads approximately 1180 ohms so it seems like its within normal range. I tested the ground shortage through the frame and that didn't give any resistance either so I've ruled that out. Now something I found when unplugging the stove to do these tests is that the ground prong for the stove has corrosion on it due to the outlet cover being partially broken and allowing moisture to drip onto the ground plug when plugged in, is this something that could be causing an issue (apart from the obvious fire hazard that I have to contact my landlord about)?
