Nice!! You could use the fact that:

max{a, b} = (a + b + |a - b|)/2

It is sufficient to just solve (x+1)/3=x and (x-2)/5=x and check which of them satisfies the equation. No need to solve when (x+1)/3 is larger than (x-2)/5, and no need to check the case when they are equal.

Good method of teaching . Keep it up !

In this particular case, you can draw real quick the two lines, and the line y=x and see right away.

One a day of sybermath keeps me going. These are less intimidating ones.

OMG!! God is kind on me. Such an easy problem which even a LAYMAN like me can solve.

Nice video!!

I just said either max returns the first expression or the second expression. I assumed first that it returned the second which means x = - 1/2, then I substitute x and got a contradiction. Then I assumed that it returned the first expression, which gives x = 1/2 and by substituing x in the expressions in max I made sure that we have no contradiction, so x = 1/2 is the unique solution.

Here you can just draw the graph for the function and see that at -1/2, the max function is 3y=x+1 which contradicts the assumption, saving a few lines of algebra ;)

I have not seen these kinda problems, nice one👍

Cool problem....
x = 1/2 is the only solution as it satisfies condition that x > -11/2
x = -1/2 isn't valid as it doesn't satisfy condition that x < -11/2

Your choose perfectly awesome problems!

It easy just solve them differently and check whether it is greater than other .

Nice solution, but i think you forgot the case where the two expressions are equal.
You can make it rigorous just by changing the ">" to a ">=" in the first case.

Alternative solution: graph it on Desmos

Great!
But, can't we just plot the graph and directly get the answer.
