MM2 Ashley, you will not be forgotten brother. Submarine life is inherently dangerous. We are very, VERY, picky on who we allow to be qualified Submarines and who gets those dolphins. At any given time you are relying on the men next to you to do the right thing at all times. I miss the brotherhood quite a bit. I would more than happily still be deploying, but was forced to retire. Being 6'6" and submarines don't mix well. Had 3 lumbar fusion surgeries (as well as 9 others ones from the wear and tear, hernias, knees, shoulders, etc.) and the first one put me out of commission because it failed and I was basically paralyzed for 2.5 months or so, because the civilian doctor who performed my surgery didn't believe I was still in pain and his surgeries didn't fail. Well it did, and 2 of the damned pins were dislodged and stabbing my damn nerves and having bone grow around them. 5 hour surgery for the 2nd one to fix that crap. Unfortunately I was down for a year and they just opted to have me retire. I miss it. Chief Electronics Technician Submarines (SS/IDW) Retired, Hooyah!

I know exactly what happens when a submarine collides with a surface warship. When I was serving on a US fast attack submarine and while doing exercises with surface ships, we collided with a surface warship when coming to periscope depth prior to surfacing. The exercise was over and the surface ship was not where it was supposed to be and they hit us. We went from periscope depth to around 150 feet in a matter of seconds. We then went to emergency deep and travelled far away from the task force before coming to the surface again.

I would go crazy in a submarine being so deep in the ocean I’m having trouble breathing just thinking about it.
