People insane enough to attack a warship on a rubber boat deserves the Darwin prize.
So please award it to them.

"As we learned in the 18th century, the way to stop piracy is to kill the pirates." -- Colonel Jeff Cooper.

I’m USA Merchant Marine, often transiting the Horn of Africa, we are extremely vulnerable, although being 660 feet over all we make only 17 knots max. Our ships take aboard Mercenaries as we move into the Indian Ocean east to west. We individually are not allowed personal weapons but our Mercs assure us they will and have shot to kill .
God Bless Them !

I worked the HST moving the ship to the WASP for NCIS investigation. We also moved a number of the injured pirates for medical treatment. I was told by one of the gunners that one dude just started popping off. Was proud of being able to be a part of it

Stop using "non lethal deterrants" and sink them to begin with. Take away the incentive to commit piracy and it will slow down if not stop. The pirates are the ones that opted to begin piracy, let them suffer the consequences.

You know what's better than a water cannon?

An actual cannon.

I appreciate the embellishments added to the story. But as far as I can find the reports stated they were attacking at night, and didn't realize they were attacking a navy warship until it was too late.

You know we’re in trouble
When the navy is non lethal

I was on an aircraft carrier, and TRUST ME, THERE’S NO WAY IN HELL, a pirate could take one of those ships. No way in hell. They wouldn’t even get close.

Can you imagine even attempting to overtake an actual us DESTROYER WARSHIP!? I'm trying so hard to see the mindset of how the pirates thought that would go, to say they were "emboldened" is the greatest understatement ever. It would be like... if a bunny rabbit strode up to the lions pride with legitimate intent to whip some ass. Mind boggling.

Imagine trying to attack a ship so large and advanced that its individual guns are bigger than your boats.

imagine choosing to be a pirate in an era of destroyer warships and lethal drones.

I’m having a hard time understanding why our Navy developed and uses “non-lethal deterrents”! These are armed people attacking ships! Why not just let the lead rip on them? Without them being sent to Davy Jones’s locker, they’ll just keep doing it!

Exchange the water cannons for guns you will get less pirates instead of just clean ones

I was in the navy for 6 years. Watched one of those boats approach our ship. We turned them into a reef. Really was a waste of bullets tbh

17th century pirates usually appeared because the various empires at war with each other hired people with their own cannon-outfitted ships to fight for them as privateers, then revoked their letter of marque after the war ended. This left them with usually few options to make a living even when they were aware that they were no longer legal mercenaries. The modern equivalent would be like a private citizen owning a destroyer or cruiser and being hired by us to harass Russia or China, then we suddenly revoke their commission later. That would be a much bigger problem for us than some guys on speed boats.

When pirates return home safely it sends the wrong message. When they go out and never return and are never seen again, it sends the right message.

Show NO mercy to the pirates - let them suffer the consequences!

If any of you haven't seen the movie Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks) I highly recommend it. It has to do with this topic. And it is excellent.
