As it's impossible to accurately depict the surface of a sphere on a flat plane, maps distort certain parts of the map in order to make them fit. The different ways of distorting the map are called map projections. This one is called the mercator projection which was developed to assist sailors with navigation. They did this by focalizing the distortion around the poles so that the areas sailors would often use would have the least distortion.

This is the result of the distortions regarding spherical geometry and how you lose geometric information when you translate it to Euclidean geometry.

It’s the Mercator projection. It “lies” because in order to display a spherical area on a flat surface you have to project it onto that surface which creates distortions.

The Mercator projection at work, it's elementary school stuff. I barely attended school, and I still remember being taught that the Mercator map wasn't a guide as to the size of a country, just it's geographic location
