Or, imagine this. One pharaoh commissions it as a lion, a hundred years or so later, they're "under new management" and the new guy says nah, make it look like me. Kinda like, make my pyramid bigger and more elaborate.

i have 3 theories.
1. it was orignally a jackal, a monument to Anubis, god of the underworld
2. When a new pharaoh came to power, he ordered the statue be carved in his image
3. it was literally just carved with a smaller head because idk

Could have been a previous ruler or a lion as others believe. I think most people agree it was definitely re-chiseled. Most likely, it probably looked like one of the other smaller sphinx statues than have been recovered. I agree that it was probably constructed when the constellation Leo aligned with the vernal equinox.

There is also a significant difference in the detail a shape of the head compared to the body. The head is smooth where the body is blocky

The original sphinx had another face, but not a lion. It was the face of Thoth, later to be replaced with his older brother Marduk.

I listened to the Emerald tablets of Thoth recently and it says in there that under a statue of a lion with a face liken to man lays his ship
